There are many ways to be involved at the University of Victoria. In early September the Student Union Building holds university club days where you have the opportunity to experience what each club has to offer. There are heavy metal clubs to comedy clubs and even the “Hoop Love Club” for the hoollahoop lovers out there. Joining a UVic club grants you access to a network with other students that have similar interests, and allows you to continue enjoying your hobbies between academic endeavors.

Another way you can get involved on campus is through volunteering. For example, there’s a position at the Equity and Human Rights Office that teaches students how to present workshops on topics such as human rights and social justice. If you are interested in studying language or international studies, becoming a conversation partner may be the right volunteering opportutnity for you. At the English Language Center students that speak English as a second language are encouraged to speak English with you, their new English language conversation partner and friend.

There are always UVic events going on that you can read about in the “Martlet”, our university’s campus newspaper. I personally enjoy going to the Vikes basketball games with my friends whenever I can. It’s a great way to represent your team wearing that yellow and blue! Did you know UVic also has their own cheerleading squad? And of course there are after parties. The engineers on campus often organize something great for everyone, and there are also karaoke nights at Felicita’s. Definitely check out university sporting events and consider joining a recreational sports team.

Needless to say, there are many ways to get involved here at UVic, no matter who you are or what you are interested in.
