Genetics: Can we really blame it all on our genes?
Genetics is a key element in health and propensity for age-related disease. This series will explain the basics of genetics and how the human genome project has enhanced our understanding of disease and disorders. In addition, an understanding of genetics can have profound implications on how treatment and medications are individualized for optimal effects.

The Body Works? Part One
The series will cover how four body systems work, what happens to them as we age, what we can do about it, and the medical interventions that are possible. The intent of the series is to provide information that will be helpful to you when communicating with medical personnel as well as understanding what is happening to your own body.
Session 1. The heart and cardiovascular system (February 27th, 2016)
The heart is a muscular pump that distributes blood around the body. This series will examine the structures of the heart and how they contribute to the flow of blood to the different parts of the body, with particular reference to the various valves that direct the blood flow, the way the heart receives its own blood to function, and how the rhythm of the heart is controlled. We will also examine what can go wrong and how it can be fixed with modern medical technologies.
Session 2. Joints or articulations (March 5th, 2016)
Our body consists of many joints that unfortunately experience some challenges as we get older. This presentation will examine the structure of the major joints (in particular the hip and knee) and how they contribute to movement and stability. The presentation will explore how the joints change with age and the medical interventions that are possible to alleviate some of the problems.
Session 3. The digestive system (March 12th, 2016)
We are what we eat. This series will follow what happens once food enters our mouths and the journey it takes through the body. Along the way we will discuss some of the things that can present problems, some surgical interventions, and how we can help our digestive system function better.
Session 4. The back, how to protect it and what can be done when things go really wrong (March 19th, 2016)
Most people have back or neck problems at some point in their lives. This session will examine how the back is structured and why the structure can lead to back and neck problems, especially as we age. The session will look at the current medical interventions to help or alleviate back and neck problems as we get older and how problems in the back can produce pain in other areas of the body.
