Get Excited About UVic Research!

Last night, I attended the Research Reels video showcase, part of the Ideafest research festival, at Cinecenta.
I have been a student at UVic for four years, and let me tell you, I was floored by the diversity of research going on here. I had no idea any of this was happening, and I feel like my mind has been expanded in the most exciting way.
If you’re unfamiliar with Research Reels, it’s a film competition that aims to feature research projects at UVic. There are two categories: social media (1 minute or less) and feature (3 minutes or less).

One of my classmates had a video for consideration, and our prof brought all of us during class time to support her. Her video featured the Community Cabbage and one of our other classmates, and won People’s Choice in the social media category! There were cash prizes for the first and second place winners in each category, plus the People’s Choice that allowed audience members to cast a ballot for one film in each.
You can watch the films on YouTube now (or at the bottom of this post), and I highly recommend taking a look. Films were featured across disciplines and across degree levels. Undergrads, MA students, PhD students, and profs featured an extremely diverse range of research.

Being on Vancouver Island, a lot of research focused on marine life and the dangers of noise pollution. Despite a definite emphasis on the environment and the oceans (very important areas of research, now more than ever!), I cannot overstate the vast range of research featured.
Whether your interests lie with social justice oriented applied theatre, Alzheimer’s research, 3D bioprinting, or Indigenous womxn’s wellness and health leadership, there was something for everyone. I learned a lot about things I never thought would interest me, and about things I had never heard of.
Although UVic is on the smaller side, there is no shortage of research opportunities here. Ideafest continues this week with all kinds of events featuring UVic’s broad spectrum of research, arts, and innovation.
