4 Reasons Why Applicants to UVic Should Attend Recruitment Events at UVic

As someone who’s lived in Victoria for most of my life and thought I had a pretty good idea what UVic was like while I was still in high school, I can’t say enough how valuable it was for me to attend Next Steps events before I started my first-year.

I learned so much about different resources on campus, eased my anxieties about being a little fish in a huge pond, and most importantly, became excited about starting at UVic.

Some may say you can’t know what being a UVic student is like until you get here, but I think these events will give you the preparation you need to feel confident about your first year. So, here are four reasons why you should attend next steps events at UVic if you’re an applicant:

Learn about your Faculty

Your faculty is what you’ll be tied to for the several years of your degree, so attending a virtual Faculty Spotlight event is a great way to get a feel for what your faculty is like, the different resources that are available, and the different opportunities your faculty offers.

From February 27 to March 9, each faculty will put on one of these spotlights and you can register here!

See the campus

While many events like Discover UVic take place virtually to accommodate prospective students from all over the world, Discover UVic USA is an event coming up on February 19, 2023, that allows you to visit campus in person to learn more about what it’s really like to be a UVic Student.  Discover UVic USA is an event created especially for prospective students and applicants who currently study in the USA. It’s a great way to spend your Presidents’ Day Weekend!

I remember going to a similar event when I was still in high school and feeling so affirmed that I made the right university choice. It’s a great way to explore UVic and get a feel for the geography of the campus, so if you’re able to make it, I highly recommend it! Check out all UVic’s events for prospective students on the website.

Learn about UVic student life

Besides Faculty-specific meetings, UVic is offering campus spotlight events on many areas of student life, such as:

These spotlights are a great way to learn about what life as a UVic student is actually like, and become aware of the programs that make being a student here even more fun and vibrant.

Find out about campus supports

No matter how prepared you think you are for university, the transition can be tough. Luckily, UVic is offering campus spotlights on the Centre for Accessible Learning (February 16) and on Student Wellness (February 21), so that you can find out more about where to turn when you’re struggling. It’s a good idea to have these resources handy throughout your time at UVic so that you stay on top of being the best student you can be.

I can’t say enough great things about Next Steps, Faculty Spotlights and Campus Spotlight events at UVic. I’m a huge planner and I like to know the details before I enter a situation, so attending events like these when I was still in first-year eased a lot of the anxiety I felt. Let me know — which of these events are you attending?
