3rd Annual UVic Right to Play Dodgeball Tournament

If you’re looking for something to do this Friday night, on November 27th, I have you covered.

I am the Director of Media Relations and Social Media for the Right to Play UVic Club. We fundraise for the global organization Right to Play. This Friday night at 7:30 pm at the UVic CARSA Field house, we will host our third annual dodgeball tournament. There will be lots of great prizes, fun competition and a great chance to get moving!

What does Right to Play (RTP) do?

rtpRTP is a global organization that works to foster development and empowerment in impoverished areas around the world through the power of PLAY. It is our belief that a child has a RIGHT to play, it is not a privilege that depends on your economic or social situation. Play is so powerful, and is an amazing educational tool.

The organization was founded by Norwegian speed skater and four-time Olympic gold medalist Johann Olav Kloss during a humanitarian trip to Eritrea right before the 1994 Lillehammer Winter Olympics. In Eritrea he witnessed the benefits of play for a child’s development, and saw this as an opportunity to make a difference. Following his world record performance at the Olympics, he pledged his gold medal bonus money, and invited other Norwegian athletes to do the same. Norway won 26 Olympic medals and jointly raised over $18 million. The organization took off, with Right to Play officially founded in the year 2000.

To get a brief overview, check out this video! The organization is now global, with national offices in Canada, Norway, the Netherlands, Switzerland, the United Kingdom, the United States and Germany. The UVic RTP Club raises money for this amazing cause and the organization.

Ever since I was little, I have dreamed about becoming an ambassador for Right to Play. It is still one of my goals, and a way to use my athletic accomplishments to give back to the world. Being involved with RTP UVIC has been such an amazing opportunity. I am so proud to be a part of it.
