Want a job after university? Take PW at UVic

prowriteEver had any doubts about what you’re doing with your life?  Do you often wonder what you’re going to do with your degree after you graduate? I’ve got a solution for you – get a Professional Writing Minor.

It doesn’t matter if you’re a major in biology, sociology or any of the other ologies. Professional Writing will make you employable …guaranteed. This program is designed for any designation at UVic. The courses teach students a skill that you’ll use in any job …the ability to write well.

The worst misconception is that you only need to know how to write if you’re an English major. The ability to write well puts anyone above the competition when it comes to gaining employment.

The program encompasses all aspects of communication in today’s job market, from Web Design, Visual Rhetoric (finally master the Adobe Suite), Social Media, Print Genre, Government Writing and Report Writing for Business. Get hands-on experience with professors who all have real-world experience to complement their teaching abilities.

The smaller class size means everyone gets to know the members of the program well. You can’t escape putting in the work for a group project if your partner’s in the next class!

I’ve made many friends from the program – people who aren’t in English classes with me but people who are studying biology, political science and even anthropology.

Look at any job posting and glance down at the skills required. I guarantee you’ll see communication skills on the top of that list.

For current students, it doesn’t matter what year you’re in. As long as you’ve taken a first year English class, you’re eligible to apply. For future students who want real-world skills that are useful in the job market …think about the Professional Writing minor.

      Hi Larry,

I created my blog, Chipsnflicks for Social Media and Electronic Communication, or ENGL 407. It’s an awesome class! Dr. Grove-White goes through everything from blogs to creating videos to creating a whole social media campaign…something definitely useful in today’s job market. Thanks for the comment!
