My Campus Essentials

What I’ve learned throughout my first semester, is that University is a ton of trial and error. There are a few important things that I would’ve never thought to be essential in University life, but now I’m not sure I could’ve made it without them. If you’re reading this as a prospective student, hopefully, this list helps you out.

1. A compact umbrella

It seems so simple, but it’s something often forgotten when you’re used to high school classes all under the same roof.

Victoria is an immensely rainy city, and having one of these on hand will make sure you don’t get drenched for class. I found having an outside pocket on my backpack ensures that I don’t get my books inside my bag soggy from a wet umbrella.

2. Group Study Rooms

It can be challenging to find a place to sit on campus in between classes, especially with a group of friends. I don’t live on campus, so I, unfortunately, don’t have a dorm to go back to. Whether it’s late-night cramming (I don’t recommend this), or rushed lunchtime homework before class, group study rooms in the library have been a true gift for myself and my friends to get together and (try to) get some work done.

3. A UVic Hoodie

I swear I’m not a sponsor for the UVic bookstore. Let me tell you, mob mentality is a real thing — everyone on campus has one of these. But it sure is hard not to purchase one, and then wear at least once a week, when they’re so freaking comfortable and trendy on this campus.

4. White Chocolate Macchiatos

Everyone has their favourite drink, but I have an unhealthy obsession with White Chocolate Macchiatos. You can find them on campus at multiple locations, like at the Bibliocafe in the library, as well as the Boardwalk Cafe at Mystic Market. They’re DELICIOUS.

5. Like 5 REALLY GOOD black pens

I used to think writing my notes in all different colours was cool and creative, but in the reality of University, you usually don’t have time to worry about cool and creative when it comes to note-taking. I try to keep at least 5 of my favourite black pens on hand because there’s nothing worse than a pen running out mid-lecture. I just bought three more at the bookstore to be in fact! (Once again I swear I’m not a sponsor)
