How to find cheap avocados

Ah, avocados. An amazing food, but usually so expensive!

Avocados are a trendy ‘basic’ food, but they are nevertheless delicious. They are so tricky, though, right? You never know of you will get something like this:

or this:

All that money you spent might end up in the compost. They are so good I still want to buy them, even when my bank account looks like the half without the pit. If you learn to take chances when buying avocados, some will pay off. I have one such story here.

I recently went to The Root Cellar, a great place to get cheap, good quality veg in Victoria. They have a discount rack near the door to the back in the produce section. On this glorious shelf, I found a pack of 6 (six!) avocados for $2.49! 6 avocados for $2.49? Unheard of! I was ecstatic. That’s the price of a single avocado sometimes. They were very ripe, so that was a concern, but I brought them home anyway.

So, I had my steal of a deal avocados. I assumed they would have lots of brown spots. Boy, was I wrong! I opened the first one, and it was absolutely perfect. The kind of avocados vegan YouTubers wave at the camera and smirk about. The second was perfect, the third and fourth had minor brown spots, and the fifth again, was great. What do you do when you have ripe avocados? Make guacamole!

Here’s my dad’s guacamole recipe:

This serves 5+ people, and will be ok in the fridge for a few days. Add a bit more salt or lime juice to freshen it up if it goes brown. If you want to eat it with something besides tortilla chips, try homemade fries.

5 ripe avocados
¼ cup red onion
1 jalapeno (keep the seeds and ribs in if you like it spicy)
Juice of 1 lime
½ teaspoon salt
1 cup (or less) chopped cilantro

Chop it all small, and smash together in a bowl. Enjoy!
