The best job in the world. Can you apply? Yes!!!

5Wow what a journey it was: three years filled with emotion, learning, friendship and growth. For three years I worked with the UVic Residence Services as a Residence Program Leader and Community Leader.

I still remember the day I set foot on campus. The first people who greeted me were my Community Leaders/CLs/RAs. They were so welcoming and awesome that to this day I remember the interaction four years ago. Not surprisingly, I am still in touch with them.

I was very positively influenced by the work they did in the community I lived in, making sure everyone was safe and engaged.

It’s a big deal to come to a new place in university and an even bigger deal to be in a position where you are making everyone feel welcomed, safe and academically inclined. I loved the interactive events my CLs organized for my residence. My favourite was the one where we went ice skating in the middle of the night. It was my first time skating and it was just incredible.

Becoming a Community Leader

3All these interactions left a strong impression on me and when the job was posted, I decided that I was going to give it a try and apply to be a Community Leader.

I wanted to give back the same awesomeness that I felt in my first year because of my CLs. I wanted to build and be a part of a community where everyone felt comfortable and respected.

I was accepted, and extremely excited for the next year to begin. I knew it was going to be good, but what I didn’t know was that I was in for a big treat. It was great, so great that I came back again the next year and the year after!

The most fun job ever

I can guarantee you that it’s the most fun job you’ll ever have. Yes, it’s a job so you do get paid. Plus you get to live on campus with guaranteed housing and if you’re lucky enough you might even get a double room all to yourself.

7During my time as a Community Leader I met the most incredible people ever. My fellow student-staff members, my wonderful residents and my supervisors: everyone contributed some way or another to make me who I am today.

The job was not just fun. It was a learning experience. I’ve grown so much in the past three years. Sometimes I think back and wonder, what if I hadn’t applied for this in the first place? What would my life be like now?

Would I still have my incredible friends that I am so proud of, with whom I know my friendship has grown exponentially and will keep growing for a lifetime? Would I be as confident as I am in speaking out and getting out of my comfort zone?

4Thank God I applied! I can’t imagine what it would be like without all of these wonderful chapters.

This whole experience has polished me, instilled leadership skills, made me more considerate and changed my perspective on life.

Trust me, this will without a doubt be an amazing experience that you won’t have anywhere else. From the training to making friends to building strong foundations to the bit-of-a-challenge in-nights. It’s all worth it.
