Top 5 reasons why you should travel with your friends

Just in case this entire community blog hasn’t given you enough convincing arguments as to why UVic is so great, here’s another one: UVic gives you not one, but TWO reading breaks: one during mid to late November and another one during early February.

For those of you who don’t know, the real purpose of reading break is to take some time off school and catch up on the work you’ve fallen behind on – particularly readings (hence the name “reading” break).

However, a good portion of the student community understands this term as a break from reading, as opposed to a break to read.

Needless to say, I belong to the latter group of students; thus, I decided to travel back to Mexico City this reading break and bring two of my best friends along!

Meet Gaby, one of the smartest, most outspoken & loyal people I know. We met in first year residence & have become the closest friends since then. We are also roommates, which has inevitably intensified our friendship & brought our closeness to the next level. Seriously though, she knows my secrets, hopes & dreams better than I do.

This is Aoife. She might seem little on the outside, but you would never guess how HUGE her heart is. We also met in residence and, to be honest, I had no idea we were so compatible until this trip took place. I am eternally grateful and extremely lucky to have her as one of my best friends because she’s the nicest person on the face of the Earth- no joke.

I have compiled the best 5 reasons (and trust me, there were LOTS to chose from) as to why, contrary to popular belief, you should travel more with your friends.

  1. No awkwardness!

I mean, they’re already your best friends, so you can skip past the whole “Do you want to sit in the front or back seat?” and the “Oh no, please, you take the last piece of this delicious chocolate cake. I insist.” Instead, you KNOW your tallest friend will want the front seat because it’s more comfortable and you’ll OBVIOUSLY have the last piece of cake yourself – you snooze, you loose, am I right?

See what I mean? Here’s the three of us driving around in a golf cart: Gaby’s the tallest, so it just made sense she took the spot where she could stretch and show off her super long Victoria’s Secret model legs. Then there’s Aoife and me- she’s always driving me around in Victoria, so she obviously wanted to take a break from driving, which put me behind the wheel, and allowed for her to relax and enjoy the view!

  1. They’re the best company around

Again, you chose them to be your best friends, so you can be sure the conversation will always be interesting and the jokes will be never-ending! Trips with your best friends have a 120% good-time guarantee.

2.2 Seriously! Look at this view and tell me you wouldn’t be having a good time if you were there. I dare you.

  1. You can be as blunt/honest as you want

If you’re only travelling with girl friends, there is no guarantee that the trip will be drama free. Let’s be honest, it’s gossipy ladies we’re talking about here. That being said, if there happens to be some sort of drama, you will know how to take control of the situation and deal with the “drama” because you’ll know exactly what’s really going on.

There was no drama per se- there were only “hangry” (anger due to hunger feelings) moments. Throw some tacos in the mix, and poof, “drama’s” gone.

  1. They never cease to surprise you (and vice versa)

You might think you know pretty much everything about them, but when you travel with friends — or anyone for that matter — you get to experience different things with them which, in the end, is extremely rewarding and will probably bring you even closer to each other.

Aoife and I became so much closer with this trip —  just look at this picture and tell me you don’t see the love right there! Our heads are even making a heart shape together!

  1. Picture-perfect photos are a given

Once again, you’re used to being around them all the time, so your Facebook albums will look like a compilation of the best Kodak moments.

Our body language pretty much says it all. We’re also in height order — and we didn’t even plan that!
