On December 6th, 1989, 14 women were murdered and another 14 people were injured at what is known as the Montreal massacre, which occurred at École Polytechnique de Montréal. The gunman killed these people because they were women, it was an intentional act of gender-based violence.
Everyone has a responsibility to examine their own behavior and speak out against aggression. We must also tackle the deep-rooted systemic inequalities that increase women’s vulnerability to violence.
Event details – Walk to End Gender-Based Violence
This year, UVic is commemorating the National Day of Remembrance and Action on Violence Against Women with a Walk to End Gender-Based Violence. Join us on this day and help us commit to ending this form of violence.
All members of the university, including faculty, staff and students are encouraged to attend this event and are welcome to join the gathering and leave as their schedule permits. The broader community is also welcome. Classes will be cancelled from 11:30 am to 12:30 pm on December 6th to allow UVic students and staff to participate in this event.
This year we will gather at 11:30am at the Petch Fountain, in front of the library, to begin with a territorial acknowledgement and guest speakers. Following the speakers there will be a silent walk to the Engineering and Computer Science Lab Wing where we will hear from speakers and have closing remarks.
This event will be outdoors rain or shine due to COVID protocols.
