Dr. Barney Williams is a therapist and elder of Tla-o-qui-aht First Nation. On May 14, he was awarded the 2022 Courage To Come Back Award in the addictions category. He developed an alcohol problem in his twenties after enduring many years of abuse at residential schools and the loss of his mother. With the help of elders, he was able to recover from his addiction and go back to school. As a therapist, he helps others going through similar circumstances. He is now 82 years old and has been sober for 54 years.
