Life transitions are periods of transformation in our lives. They often mark the beginning of something new. These changes can be positive: a new job, a big move, or marriage. They can also be more difficult, like the end of a relationship or a job loss. Big changes are opportunities to grow, learn and change. But they can also be overwhelming.

Luckily there are many techniques that can help you keep calm and grounded during big life transitions. You can try:

  • Journaling: taking a few minutes each day to write down your thoughts and feelings in private can help you make sense of big emotions, and put things in perspective.
  • Box breathing: when you feel overwhelmed, take a moment and try this grounding exercise.

1. Breathe in, slowly counting to 4. Feel the air enter your lungs.
2. Hold your breath for 4 seconds.
3. Slowly exhale through your mouth for 4 seconds.
4. Hold your breath for 4 seconds.
5. Repeat steps 1 to 4 until you feel re-centered.2
