The purpose of practicum experience at UVic is to prepare students for generalist practice according to the BCCNP Entry-Level RN Competencies. Please check your UVic email regularly because the School of Nursing will only communicate with students through this email address. For all inquiries, please include your full name and student number.
Practicum starts after the required CPE workshops, labs, and/or other orientations established by the School of Nursing. The start date is based on legal coverage by hospitals and agencies. Prior to the start of practicum, please review the practicum handbook for more information on roles and responsibilities.
Shifts will include days, evenings, weekends, and nights, ranging from 8 to 12 hours depending on the rotation of the unit.
Frequently Asked Questions
How does the placement process unfold?
- During orientation in January, the School of Nursing will give you information on the placement process and upcoming placements.
- Practica Coordinators place requests on HSPnet (Health Science Placement Network) 4-6 months in advance and negotiate placements with each agency. All schools submit requests at the same time– this includes all health disciplines such as LPN, BSN, post-diploma RN, NP, OT, PT, SW, C&Y, unit clerks, HCAs, and so forth.
How are students assigned to a practice location?
- The Practica Coordinators will give students access to HSPnet in February and June for May and September placements respectively.
- HSPnet allows students to provide their top 10 preferences under the collaborative learning unit model (N370/470CL) and preceptor model (N370/470VI).
- This process is not first come first serve; therefore do not attempt to log in without your temporary password.
- The Practica Coordinators take into consideration previous placements, learning needs, areas of interest, and long-term goals. They are interested in the population of focus you would like to work with, i.e.: child and family, acute, community, mental health, older adult, etc. and not the specific unit.
- You cannot choose your placement location as these selections only reflect your preferences; therefore there is no guarantee this will be your final placement.
- The Coordinators will assess your previous placements and determine if there are populations of interest that you have not yet experienced.
Can I look for my own placement and/or preceptor?
- No, please do not do it.
Can I have a placement on the same unit/floor while I am working an HCA/LPN/ESN?
- No. This is because of the need to clearly distinguish your role as a nursing student from a position of paid employment.
Can I work on the same unit/floor as a family member?
- No.
Can I be on the same unit more than once?
- Technically yes, you can be on the same unit more than once because of where you were placed your previous institution (e.g. Camosun College) and now UVic. This does not mean you can have the same placement for N370/470 and N475/491, i.e. CPEs 3 and 4.
Can I work while I am on practicum?
- Yes and no: it is generally not recommended for students to work during CPE 3 and 4; however students can do this.
- If there are conflicting times with shifts, students are expected to make up missed hours at practicum to fulfill the required hours.
When will I know my placement?
- It generally takes about 1-1.5 months from when the HSPnet closes for placements to be sent out to students.
- Certain floors/units will interview students prior to accepting them; therefore some students may know earlier than others.
Do I need to have to my first aid, CPR, mask fit test, and/or criminal record check up to date before I enter practice?
- Yes, please see the UVic Calendar for the most updated information.
- Criminal record checks (both police and solicitor general)
- CPR C: renew every 2 years after issue
- Mask fit test: renew annually
What if I have a request for special accommodations in practice?
- Please contact Paul Meier (pmeier@uvic.ca), Admissions Liason Officer and Student Advisor, sooner rather than later, regarding your inquiry.
- Requests for accommodation will only be considered for health, disability, or other exceptional circumstances. Some accommodations require a formal request to the Progression Committee. Accommodation can not be granted for childcare issues.
- If childcare is your concern, please contact the Single Parent Resource Centre of Victoria and the University of Victoria Family Centre to look into day and overnight care for your child or children.
- If you have special accommodation requests, please fill out and submit an Accommodation Request Form.
How can I prepare for practicum?
Whether you are a nursing student or an employed student nurse, if you are working within Island Health, there are several steps you can take to make sure you are prepared. Please visit the Student Practice page through Island Health for more information.
