There are many awards that are given to students to celebrate their excellence in areas such as academics, leadership, and community involvement. This page provides a brief overview of what is available for nursing students.
Please note there are three terms at UVic:
- Fall term: September to December
- Winter term: January to April
- Summer term: May to August
Certain awards and bursaries will have deadlines throughout the year and often correspond to a specific term.

UVic School of Nursing Scholarships, Entrance
Students may apply to be considered for entrance scholarships, which are based on marks and other criteria such as academic achievement and volunteer and community work. All UVic entrance scholarships require a minimum 85% admission average, unless otherwise specified in the terms of reference of the scholarship. Recipients will be selected upon the recommendation of the School of Nursing. Students must also be registered in at least 4.50 academic units.
Scholarships include:
- Edna Mary Wootten Scholarship: awarded to academically outstanding undergraduate nursing students with financial need, with preference to a student who is a parent
- Robert and Audrey Harry Indigenous Scholarship in Nursing: awarded to academically outstanding Indigenous undergraduate nursing students
- Royal Jubilee Hospital School of Nursing Alumnae Association Student Award: awarded to students who are descendants of an alumna of the Royal Jubilee Hospital School of Nursing; applicants must state their relationship to the alumna and the year the alumna graduated
- Sharron Higgins Scholarship in the School of Nursing: awarded to academically outstanding undergraduate nursing students who is also a parent, with preference given to those planning to practice in Public Health Nursing

UVic School of Nursing Scholarships, In-Course
Nursing scholarships worth over $22,000 are awarded each year to students continuing to BSN degree completion at the University of Victoria, School of Nursing. Unless otherwise stated, all scholarships are awarded annually by the Senate Committee on Awards to full-time undergraduate students and are based upon grade point average (GPA) or recommendation from a department, faculty or school.

UVic School of Nursing Dorothy Kergin Bursary
The Dorothy Kergin Bursaries are open to all full-time students in the School of Nursing at the University of Victoria. Full-time status is equivalent to enrollment in 12 units for the winter session (6 units September-December & 6 units January-April) & enrollment in 4.5 units for the summer session (May-August). Decisions will be made in the School of Nursing following a review of the applications by the Student Awards & Financial Aid Office. Bursaries will be awarded approximately one month following the application deadline. Funds are allocated based on financial need and are only intended to supplement educational expenses for the term in which the application is made.

UVic School of Nursing General Bursaries
Decisions: end of July (summer term); end of December (fall and winter terms)
Eligibility
- Has Canadian citizenship or permanent residency
- Receives the maximum full-time government student loans for their period of study
- Undergraduate students: maintains registration in a minimum of 4.5 credit units per term (3.0 credit units for students with a permanent disability)
- Graduate students: meet the definition of full time status as defined by the Faculty of Graduate Studies calendar
- International students: meet the definitions of full time status, as well as make an appointment to meet with a Financial Aid Officer in Student Awards to discuss their extenuating circumstances ‘
Reminders
- Only one application is necessary to be considered for all bursaries
- Only successful applicants will be notified
- Incomplete applications will not be considered
- In addition to the online application, applicants must submit a hard copy of their current student assistance notice of assessment and a budget sheet
- Include your student number on all documentation and in any e-mail correspondence
- For bursaries that have a donor, complete the online Thank You Letter Form

Other Organizations
BC History of Nursing Society
The BC History of Nursing Society welcomes student nurse members and tries to provide additional resources directed to students. BC nurses who are members of the BC History of Nursing Society (including student members) and pursuing studies in historical aspects of nursing are eligible for financial assistance from the Society.
The purpose of the scholarship funding is to encourage undergraduate and graduate students to undertake a project or study to add to the rich heritage of nursing history. Successful applicants are expected to present on their work to the Society.
Guidelines
Scholarships are awarded twice yearly to students doing projects in the history of nursing. The study can be:
- Written essays
- Preparation of nursing biographies
- Collection and documentation of oral histories of nurses
- Preparation of historical nursing materials for display and educational purposes
- Other historical research or projects involving nursing

Canadian Mental Health Association, BC Division
Since 1982, CMHA BC has been helping people with mental illness further their pursuit of post-secondary education through our scholarship and bursary programs. Several awards are available each year to BC post-secondary students who live with mental illness or addiction. Applicants may only apply for one of the awards listed below in a given year. Only electronic submissions will be accepted.
Awards include:
- Lorne Fraser Scholarship for Mental Health Promotion: awarded to post-secondary students in BC entering the second, third, or fourth year of an undergraduate program, or any stage of a graduate program, whose education and career goals are related to mental health promotion
- Lorne Fraser Educational Bursary: awarded to students in BC currently enrolled or thinking of applying to post-secondary education or job training at an accredited BC institution
- LGM Continuous Learning Bursary: awarded to a BC student at least 19 years of age pursuing distance learning

Canadian Nurses Foundaton

The Canadian Nurses Foundation is the only National foundation solely committed to promoting the health and patient care of Canadians by financially supporting Canadian Nurses engaged in higher education, research, home health-care and specialty certification; advocating dissemination and utilization of nursing knowledge. The ranges of baccalaureate awards range from $750 to $3000.
Eligibility
- Canadian citizenship or permanent residency
- Enrollment in a Canadian university or college
- Student with at least 3 semesters remaining in their program after June 30
Application Documents
- Confirmation of registration in the next semester of your program
- Recent transcripts or web-based grades
- Two references (from academic supervisors where possible)
- Other documentation as specified in the eligibility criteria of a specific award

Registered Nurses Foundation of British Columbia (RNFBC)
Decision: October, with receipt of the award by mid-December
The RNFBC raises money for bursaries for students who are enrolled in basic, post-basic, re-entry and graduate education programs in nursing. Each year RNFBC awards a significant amount to BC residents studying nursing at colleges and universities in BC and at out-of-province institutions.
Eligibility
- Residency in British Columbia
- Hold Canadian citizenship or permanent residency
- Meet specific eligibility requirements listed under each category
- Have confirmed enrollment in any term with the respective calendar year and provide documentation to confirm

- Determine your qualification based on the RNFBC Information Package
- Complete the online application form and attach all required documentation
- Pay the $25 application fee via cheque or PayPal
