Networks4Change

“Sisters Rising” is a partner in the international study entitled Networks for Change and Well-being: Girl-led ‘from the ground up’ policy making to address sexual violence in Canada and South Africa, a six year research initiative funded by the Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council of Canada (SSHRC) and the International Development Research Centre of Canada (IDRC) as part of their International Partnerships for Sustainable Societies (IPaSS) initiative.

In Canada, Networks4Change is spearheaded by the Participatory Cultures Lab at McGill University. This larger international study includes dozens of community and university partners across Canada and South Africa. Research sites are using arts-based methods with Indigenous girls in diverse Indigenous communities (both urban and rural) in a Canadian context, and with Black South African rural girls in the provinces of the KwaZulu-Natal and the Eastern Cape. The statistics on gender and sexual iolence for girls and young women in both contexts are shocking and call for an intensifying support for girl- and community-generated responses. An intended outcome of the research is for participants to connect with other Indigenous girls taking part in the same study across Canada and in South Africa. Over the long term, the Networks4Change network will assist in featuring the study products and findings and ensure connections for research teams at a national and international level. The project officially started on August 1, 2014.
