The National Research Council of Canada (NRC) is currently developing a Marine Energy Resource Atlas for Canada. The goal of this cloud-hosted computer application is to support technical assessment of marine energy resources (waves, tidal currents, river flows). This system will allow various stakeholders to estimate and map the potential and technical energy resource by resource type, by region, and by province. It performs these estimations for a wide range of constraint scenarios and assumptions, and allows users to tailor their analysis to their particular needs. This functionality will help disseminate detailed information on Canada’s most attractive resource opportunities, and help accelerate the growth of marine renewable energy technologies, reduce the cost of pilot projects within Canada, and help establish Canadian companies as key players in this emerging industry.

PRIMED is pleased to announce that we have teamed with NRC to help develop the Marine Energy Atlas and integrate PRIMED’s high fidelity wave hind-cast data.  PRIMED has hired software developer Sam Johnson to support this project.

Sam is a 4th year Computer Science student from the University of Victoria.  Sam will be working to develop an approach for uploading and storing PRIMED’s multi-terabyte wave data-set in the cloud, develop an API for access and querying of the data set once it is in the cloud, develop documentation and user manuals for the system, and other improvements to the Atlas infrastructure.  Welcome to the team, Sam!
