All UVic Librarians and Staff members are welcome to join us for an “Introduction to Wikidata” workshop. What is Wikidata?

Wikidata is a free, collaborative, multilingual, secondary database, collecting structured data to provide support for Wikipedia, Wikimedia Commons, the other wikis of the Wikimedia movement, and to anyone in the world.

In short, Wikidata is a resource that can be read by humans AND computers. It also promises to offer an intuitive and robust globally linked data platform on which libraries and archives can add structured data around the people, places, subjects in their collections as well as use information the global community has contributed to explore their local collections in new and interesting ways.

Participants will learn about the Wikimedia universe, will sign up for their own Wikimedia account, and will learn how to contribute structured data about UVic’s Special Collections to Wikidata by doing hands-on exercises from our library catalogue; we will then see how this data can be queried and visualized in interesting ways.

ALL WELCOME! Register here.
