Call for Proposals

AGES 2021 Virtual Conference: Bridging Digital Connections

AGES invites graduate and undergraduate students, Faculty of Education faculty, staff, and alumni to participate in the 2021 Bridging Digital Connections FREE conference!

This year’s AGES conference will again provide opportunities for all members of our community to learn about and share their own research in ways that encourage engagement, discussion and connections. AGES also aims to profile the outstanding research knowledge of our faculty and the emerging knowledge of our many graduate students

Research Presentation Formats

AGES welcomes different research sharing formats such as artifacts, posters, papers, and other options. Participants are  welcome to propose another format such as a pre-recorded presentation using Kaltura, workshop or artistic expression of research.

The conference will include a research artifact panel that will allow all participants to talk about some aspect of their own research experiences in 5 minute presentations through Zoom. There will also be time for poster and paper presentations through Zoom, so that individuals can share their research in a more traditional academic format. Poster presentations will be 10 minutes and paper presentations will be 15-30 minutes. As mentioned above, alternative formats are also welcome and AGES will coordinate them alongside the artifact, poster, and presentation schedules.

Faculty Panel

There will be a faculty research methodology panel as well that will feature diverse approaches to collecting, sharing and applying research ideas to practice. The panel will feature 4-5 faculty of education researchers and will afford an opportunity to hear more about diverse research approaches and new innovations in educational thinking while providing time to have conversations and ask questions.

Supervisors

AGES encourages supervisors to join in the conference because the event is a great opportunity for graduate students to co-present with their supervisors. Graduate students – be sure to talk with your supervisor about attending with you!

eConference Grants

This year we will also award up to four (4) $500.00 eConference grants through a draw to graduate students who participate in the conference. The grant will support them to attend a subsequent conference—our goal is to help you build your research record by taking your initial presentation ideas forward to another disciplinary conference of your choice!

Conference Series Dates

The virtual conference will take place over a four week period. Attendees can attend any or all of the sessions.

Friday, March 5th, 2021: 10am – 12pm

Friday, March 12th, 2021: 10am – 12pm

Come to meetings
Attend seminars
Talk to peers, staff, and instructors about possible seminars
Suggest seminars, student panels, or workshops that you would attend
Help plan the conference in the spring
Co-create a student handbook
Or send an email to ages@uvic with your ideas

Joins AGES in a student panel about managing your sources
next Thursday, November 19th, 2020 at 4:30pm

Hector Vázquez will talk about his experience with EndNote.
Xiaopei Peng will discuss a note-taking technique called Zettelkasten, with two fantastic note-taking apps called “Roam research” and “Notion.”
Blythe Bell will share information about Covidence, which has some some amazing features for managing sources while doing a literature review.
Elaine Laberge is excited to share too! From undergrad to grad school, managing sources can be the bane of our existence. Anyone who has scrambled to get a paper in on time and realised they still had the references left to do and sources all over the place, can attest to the terror and panic. Elaine has been there, a lot! There are many ways to manage our lit review: paper and pen, Word, Excel and source management programs. How do you decide? When do you decide? Elaine will share the how and why she came to use Zotero, a free program that runs off of Firefox and is not attached to a university, as an undergrad, some of the key features and what she recently learned that she wished she would have known a long time ago.
Last but not least, Meaghan Storey will be happy to talk about Google Scholar or Mendeley.
We look forward to seeing you at the student panel!

Hello graduate and undergraduate students, Faculty of Education faculty, staff, and alumni,

We invite you to participate in our 2020 Association of Graduate Student Society (AGES) Connections FREE conference! This year’s conference will provide opportunities for all members of our community to learn about and share their own research learning in ways that encourage engagement, discussion and connections. We also want to profile the outstanding research knowledge of our faculty and the emerging knowledge of our many graduate students in the faculty.

Different research sharing formats are built into this year’s conference as a way of addressing diverse experiences and stages in the research process. For example, we will open the conference with a research artifact forum that will allow all participants—community members, students, faculty, staff and alumni to talk about some aspect of their own research experiences. An artifact forum invites conversations as everyone mixes and mingles to talk with individuals who have brought an artifact that represents their research ideas, questions, data or story.

We will also have time for poster and paper presentations, so that individuals can share their research in a more traditional academic format. This year we will also award up to four (4) $500.00 travel grants to graduate students & their supervisor to attend a subsequent conference—our goal is to help you build your research record by taking your initial presentation ideas forward to another disciplinary conference of your choice!

There will also be a faculty research methodology panel that will feature diverse approaches to collecting, sharing and applying research ideas to practice. The panel will feature 4-5 faculty of education researchers and will afford an opportunity to hear more about diverse research approaches and new innovations in educational thinking while providing time to have conversations and ask questions.

Last year we had a number of alumni and undergraduate students attend and present at the conference—and we hope to build on this success. The Research Artifact Forum and Poster session will provide great opportunities for high impact conversations without a requirement for formal research documentation. We think this way of presenting your own research and field practices provides an important way to share how you are making educational impact.

The conference will be held on March 20th from 12:30 to 5:30 pm. The final location is still being negotiated, but it will be on the UVic campus. The conference will include food and beverages—and there are no fees to pay. Just register your intention to participate by February 7th on the proposal submission form (see the link to the right under section “Posts”) and let us know your preferred way to participate.

Graduate students –be sure to talk with your supervisor about attending with you! That way you’ll be eligible to receive the $500.00 in conference travel funding.

The proposal from submission deadline is February 7th. We are happy to answer any questions you may have. Feel free to email Natasja Benfaida (ages@uvic.ca) or Catherine McGregor (edadgr@uvic.ca)
