Screening & Early Detection

Educate
Blood pressure can be a good indicator of overall heart health. High blood pressure is 140/90 or higher. Adults should have a blood pressure of less than 130/85. If your blood pressure is high, your doctor will have you come in for further assessment before confirming you have high blood pressure.

Act
Cholesterol is a type of fat in the blood that your body uses to make cells, vitamin D, and hormones. High levels of “bad” cholesterol usually have no symptoms. In fact, many people do not know they have high cholesterol until they experience a heart attack or stroke.

Screening for cholesterol is important so that it can be treated before other health problems develop.

A simple blood test can determine if you have high cholesterol. You should get your cholesterol checked by your doctor if:

  • You are male and over 40
  • You are female and over 50 or post-menopausal
  • You have heart disease, stroke, diabetes, or high blood pressure
  • You have a family history of high cholesterol
