UVic is committed to reconciliation. We’re working to foster respect and mutual understanding with all Indigenous peoples and communities. You can partner in the work of reconciliation by listening, learning and sharing on Orange Shirt Day.

Orange Shirt Day is a national annual event that honors former residential school students, their families and communities. It grew out of a residential school student’s story of having her new orange shirt that was given to her by her grandmother taken away from her on her first day of school. UVic faculty, staff and students are encouraged to wear an orange shirt on Wed., Sept. 30th as a visual symbol of our awareness of the need for ongoing reconciliation between Indigenous and non-Indigenous peoples. Learn more at http://www.orangeshirtday.org.

Orange Shirt Day will go virtual this year and will feature a conversation between UVic Chancellor Shelagh Rogers and Phyllis Webstad, whose story sparked the drive to recognize Orange Shirt Day. Join the virtual event on Sept. 30th at noon.

The UVic bookstore has the ‘every child’ orange shirts available for $20. Get yours here while quantities last! Show your support by sharing a photo of yourself wearing an orange shirt. You can upload your photos below, share them on social media using #OrangeShirtDayUVic, or email your photo to socialmedia@uvic.ca
