Orange Shirt Day is a national annual event that honors former residential school students, their families and communities. It grew out of a residential school student’s story of having her new orange shirt that was given to her by her grandmother taken away from her on her first day of school. UVic faculty, staff and students are encouraged to wear an orange shirt on Wed., Sept. 30th as a visual symbol of our awareness of the need for ongoing reconciliation between Indigenous and non-Indigenous peoples. Orange Shirt Day will go virtual this year and will feature a conversation between UVic Chancellor Shelagh Rogers and Phyllis Webstad, whose story sparked the drive to recognize Orange Shirt Day. Join the virtual event on Sept. 30th at noon.
