“The annual observance of the International Day of Persons with Disabilities was proclaimed by the United Nations General Assembly resolution 47/3 in 1992. It aims to promote the rights and well-being of persons with disabilities in all spheres of society and development, and to increase awareness of on the situation of persons with disabilities in every aspect of political, social, economic and cultural life.”

On Campus Supports:

CanAssist at the University Of Victoria: is dedicated to helping people with disabilities improve their quality of life, with a focus on promoting independence and inclusion.

Equity & Human Rights:   Equity and Human Rights is a resource for all UVic community members, providing education, information, assistance and advice in aid of building and supporting an inclusive campus.

Facilities Management: Providing a variety of services to support the principles of universal design, and to create physical environments that are usable and accessible to people with a wide range of abilities.

Human Resources – Work Life Consulting: Provides services that support a healthy workplace including health practices (active living, substance abuse, work-life balance) and Attendance and Disability Management (short-term illness/injury, return to work and physical accommodations)

Vikes Recreation: Inclusive programming and increased accessibility

Community Events
Oneability Promotion Week 2017 – This year, ProMotion Week runs from Nov. 30 through Dec. 6. Throughout the week, there will be lots of free drop-in sessions across the region where people of all abilities can try out sports such as wheelchair basketball, wheelchair rugby, adapted strength and conditioning, adapted yoga and chair-based group exercise.

On Nov. 30, UVic’s Centre for Athletics, Recreation and Special Abilities (CARSA) will host an Education Day and Open House.

The Victoria Disability Resource Centre is excited to once again host the Artists with Disabilities Showcase. Now in its fifth year, the event is held in conjunction with the United Nations’ International Day of Persons with Disabilities and celebrates the artistic accomplishments and talents of our community. Friday & Saturday, December 1-2, 2017,  10am to 5pm, Art Gallery of Greater Victoria
