Model of Nursing Practice Education

Overview

Practice-based, or workplace-integrated, learning is a fundamental component of Baccalaureate of Science in Nursing (BSN) programs. The Dedicated Education Unit (DEU) model has been implemented widely in a range of contexts over the past two decades as an alternative to traditional faculty-led and preceptor models. In Victoria BC, academic (University of Victoria School of Nursing) and practice (Island Health) partners adapted and piloted the DEU model in 2003 as a Collaborative Learning Unit (CLU).

In 2017, our academic-practice team received funding from the Michael Smith Foundation for Health Research (Nursing Research Initiative) to evaluate this practice education model and explore the impact of student learning within the CLU model on development of a knowledge informed culture and the implementation of evidence based practice in point of care settings by BSN students and Registered Nurses.

In this website, you will find information related to our CLU model and this research study.
