What is a CLU?

A Collaborative Learning Unit (CLU) is where nurses work with each other to provide Regulatory Supervision of Nursing Student Activities (BCCNM Nursing Standard) with students to share their own expertise and learn together. On these units, rather than working with individual preceptors, University of Victoria third and fourth year Bachelor of Science Nursing (BSN) students are provided regulatory supervision by CLU RNs (preceptors for the day), aligned with students’ patient assignments. Students identify in collaboration with the RN’s on the unit patient assignments consistent with their learning needs and in relation to their ongoing progress and past experiences in their program of education.

The structure of a CLU includes:

  • Students who are each in their own line (schedule of work) with their own patient assignment
  • Educators who provide regular dedicated time, resources, and support to students and CLU RNs working with students.
  • Unit teams who collectively support student learning
