Dr. Diana Varela was one of over 200 women oceanographers who had their 1-page autobiographical sketches published in this special issue. Female scientists from a wide range of oceanography disciplines at different stages of their careers addressed their career choices, challenges in a traditionally male-dominated field (not as much any more) and work-personal life balance. The contributions were the result of an open call made by the editor. This is the second “Women in Oceanography” issue; the first one was published in 2005.
