Research Interests

Annual and interannual variability of the vertical distribution of phytoplankton in the NE Pacific Ocean

The primary focus of my research is to analyze C-PROOF (Canadian-Pacific Robotic Ocean Observing Facility) glider data from the perspective of a biological oceanographer. I have decided to approach this by studying the vertical distribution of phytoplankton. More specifically, by identifying annual cycles, spatial variability, and sources of interannual variability of the deep chlorophyll maximum (DCM). Gliders are uniquely equipped to study the DCM due to their fine spatial coverage and suite of optical sensors. This data will also be used to evaluate characteristics of the DCM such as photoacclimation and particulate organic carbon distribution. In addition to my studies, I am also passionate about Scuba Diving and citizen science programs.
