Roles

We welcome all students to join the Executive Council in any capacity, whether they are interested in becoming a Director, Leader, Representative, or a general member. If you have any questions on the role such as time commitment, please feel free to connect with us.

 

Co-Presidents (2)

Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Chair all meetings of the Executive Council and bring forth the meeting agenda.
  • Be the official spokesperson for the UVNSS in external and internal affairs.
  • Liaise with other course and professional development unions at the University of Victoria to promote interfaculty relationships.
  • In absence of an Executive Council member within the Nursing Student Society, liaise with other organizations on- and off-campus.
  • Provide and share written documentation of goals and deliverables to the Executive Council once per academic session within thirty [30] days of the commencement of the session.
  • Assist other members of the Executive Council within the Nursing Student Society as required.
  • Perform other duties as outlined in the Bylaws or as directed by the Executive Council.

Director of External Affairs (1)

Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Assume all responsibilities of the Co-Presidents in their absence.
  • Liaise with organizations on- and off-campus and provide support to elected student representatives of their respective organization.
  • Register the UVNSS as an official, ratified course union at each semester.
  • Draft, submit, and present proposals for academic, publication, and travel funding as provided from the UVSS.
  • Assist in coordinating the marketing, communications, and events of the UVNSS via social media platforms and the Society’s website.
  • Provide and share written documentation of goals and deliverables to the Executive Council once per academic session within thirty [30] days of the commencement of the session.
  • Assist other members of the Executive Council within the Nursing Student Society as required.
  • Perform other duties as outlined in the Bylaws or as directed by the Executive Council.

Director of Operations (1)

Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Record the minutes of all meetings and provide a copy of the minutes to the UVSS Director of Academics after acceptance by the Executive Council.
  • Monitor the UVNSS email account (uvicnursingstudentsociety[at]gmail.com) and ensure e-mails reach the appropriate Director(s) and/or Leader(s).
  • Maintains the UVNSS calendar for relevant, upcoming events and student deadlines.
  • Organize meeting times and book rooms for UVNSS general meetings.
  • Arrange to have the UVNSS websites to be updated with minutes and other pertinent documents in a timely manner.
  • Provide and share written documentation of goals and deliverables to the Executive Council once per academic session within thirty [30] days of the commencement of the session.
  • Assist other members of the Executive Council within the Nursing Student Society as required.
  • Perform other duties as outlined in the Bylaws or as directed by the Executive Council.

Director of Finance (1)

Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Ensure financial accountability through complete and up-to-date records of monetary transactions.
  • Prepare and present the current and updated budget at the general meeting, held at the beginning of each semester.
  • Advise on incoming and outgoing expenses based on the current budget.
  • Completes vouchers, cheque requisitions, petty cash payments, and purchase orders issued by the UVNSS in a timely manner.
  • Works with the various Committees as needed to ensure financial transparency of incoming and outgoing funds.
  • Provide and share written documentation of goals and deliverables to the Executive Council once per academic session within thirty [30] days of the commencement of the session.
  • Assist other members of the Executive Council within the Nursing Student Society as required.
  • Perform other duties as outlined in the Bylaws or as directed by the Executive Council.

Grad Committee Leaders (2)

Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Organize at least one [1] graduation event for the graduating nursing class of the year.
  • Search for available venues and shortlist for a Grad Committee vote to be then presented to the Executive Council for approval.
  • Maintain a separate budget from UVNSS funds specific to the needs of the Grad Committee.
  • Recruit and organize volunteers to assist with Grad Committee-specific activities, including but not limited to: hosting fundraisers and setting up the venue.
  • Works with the Director of External Affairs to promote the respective Committee’s events.
  • Maintain written communications between other Directors and Committee Leaders on a monthly basis.
  • Provide and share written documentation of goals and deliverables to the Executive Council once per academic session within thirty [30] days of the commencement of the session.
  • Assist other members of the Executive Council within the Nursing Student Society as required.
  • Perform other duties as outlined in the Bylaws or as directed by the Executive Council.

Global Health Committee Leader (1)

Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Organize at least one [1] event or initiative per semester that congruent to the goals established by the respective Committee.
  • Promote dialogue on current events and utilize a global health perspective to establish events such as but not limited to guest speakers and fundraisers.
  • Works with the Director of External Affairs to promote the respective Committee’s events.
  • Maintain written communications between other Directors and Committee Leaders on a monthly basis.
  • Provide and share written documentation of goals and deliverables to the Executive Council once per academic session within thirty [30] days of the commencement of the session.
  • Assist other members of the Executive Council within the Nursing Student Society as required.
  • Perform other duties as outlined in the Bylaws or as directed by the Executive Council.

Indigenous Initiatives Committee Leader (1)

Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Organize at least one [1] event or initiative per semester that congruent to the goals established by the respective Committee.
  • Collaborate with the UVic Indigenous Initiative Committee to address current concerns for Indigenous students such as curriculum gaps.
  • Liaise between students and instructors if any concerns arise pertaining to Indigenous issues
  • Advocate for the continued support of Indigenous studies.
  • Communicate to the UVNSS and nursing students of workshop opportunities that can promote decolonization of nursing practice and development of cultural attunement.
  • Works with the Director of External Affairs to promote the respective Committee’s events.
  • Maintain written communications between other Directors and Committee Leaders on a monthly basis.
  • Provide and share written documentation of goals and deliverables to the Executive Council once per academic session within thirty [30] days of the commencement of the session.
  • Assist other members of the Executive Council within the Nursing Student Society as required.
  • Perform other duties as outlined in the Bylaws or as directed by the Executive Council.

Mentorship Committee Leader (1)

Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Organize at least one [1] event or initiative per semester that congruent to the goals established by the respective Committee.
  • Manages the Facebook page, UVic Nursing Student Mentorship and responds accordingly to student inquiries.
  • Ensures all information on the UVNSS website pertaining to mentorship is accurate and notifies the Webmaster for any changes.
  • Liaise with the Faculty Representative(s) on a regular basis to ensure sustainability of the mentorship program.
  • Attends and speaks at nursing orientations as organized by affiliate institutions such as Camosun College wherever possible.
  • Maintain written communications between other Directors and Committee Leaders on a monthly basis.
  • Provide and share written documentation of goals and deliverables to the Executive Council once per academic session within thirty [30] days of the commencement of the session.
  • Assist other members of the Executive Council within the Nursing Student Society as required.
  • Perform other duties as outlined in the Bylaws or as directed by the Executive Council.

Social Committee Leaders (2)

Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Coordinate all events of the UVNSS excluding the events organized by the Grad Committee.
  • Organize fundraisers to support the Grad Committee (50%), charitable organizations as determined by the Executive Council (25%), and the CNSA (25%).
    • Such events include but are not limited to: barbeques at the Camosun College or UVic campus, social crawls, and end-of-semester celebrations.
  • Collaborate with the Director of External Affairs in coordinating the marketing and communications of the UVNSS.
  • Maintain written communications between other Directors and Committee Leaders on a monthly basis.
  • Provide and share written documentation of goals and deliverables to the Executive Council once per academic session within thirty [30] days of the commencement of the session.
  • Assist other members of the Executive Council within the Nursing Student Society as required.
  • Perform other duties as outlined in the Bylaws or as directed by the Executive Council.

Student Advocacy and Curriculum Committee Leader (1)

Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Organize at least one [1] event or initiative per semester that congruent to the goals established by the respective Committee.
  • Participate in monthly Curriculum Committee meetings hosted by the School of Nursing.
  • Communicate to the Executive Council the events of each Curriculum Committee meeting in a timely manner.
  • In collaboration with the Ombudsperson, assist students wherever necessary and ensure the privacy and confidentiality of these students who seek guidance.
  • Maintain written communications between other Directors and Committee Leaders on a monthly basis.
  • Provide and share written documentation of goals and deliverables to the Executive Council once per academic session within thirty [30] days of the commencement of the session.
  • Assist other members of the Executive Council within the Nursing Student Society as required.
  • Perform other duties as outlined in the Bylaws or as directed by the Executive Council.

BCNU Representative (1)

Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Liaises between UVic nursing students and the South Island BCNU branch.
  • Maintains contact with the BCNU South Island representative about all upcoming BCNU events, potential student funding, and any important meetings.
  • Presents information given by BCNU South Island representative to the student body.
  • Works with the Director of External Affairs to promote ARNBC events.
  • Provide and share written documentation of goals and deliverables to the Executive Council once per academic session within thirty [30] days of the commencement of the session.
  • Assist other members of the Executive Council within the Nursing Student Society as required.
  • Perform other duties as outlined in the Bylaws or as directed by the Executive Council.

CNSA Official Delegate (1)

Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Collaborates with the Associate Delegate(s) in accomplishing the established roles and responsibilities.
  • Serves as the main contact between the CNSA and UVic and monitors the CNSA e-mail (victoria[at]cnsa.ca) on a regular basis.
  • Communicates and sends monthly reports to the Western Prairie Regional Director and the Faculty Representative at UVic.
  • Participates and votes on behalf of UVic at Regional Executive and National Assembly meetings and scheduled phone conferences.
  • In collaboration with the Director of External Affairs, disseminates information such as but not limited to: current CNSA activities, position statements, and resolutions.
  • In collaboration with the Director of External Affairs, organize student travel to Regional and National CNSA Conferences by submitting requests for funding to appropriate bodies.
  • In collaboration with the Social Committee Leader, organize fundraising events.
  • Provide and share written documentation of goals and deliverables to the Executive Council once per academic session within thirty [30] days of the commencement of the session.
  • Assist other members of the Executive Council within the Nursing Student Society as required.
  • Perform other duties as outlined in the Bylaws or as directed by the Executive Council.

CNSA Associate Delegates (2)

Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Collaborates with the Official Delegate in their duties and responsibilities.
  • Acts as a proxy in the event of the Official Delegate’s absence.
  • Attend all business meetings of the Regional Executive and National Assembly.
  • Promote the CNSA and respective activities in the chapter.
  • Provide and share written documentation of goals and deliverables to the Executive Council once per academic session within thirty [30] days of the commencement of the session.
  • Assist other members of the Executive Council within the Nursing Student Society as required.
  • Perform other duties as outlined in the Bylaws or as directed by the Executive Council.

NNPBC Representative (1)

Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Maintains contact with the Vancouver Island NNPBC Representative about events, bursaries, and requests for funding.
  • Works with the Director of External Affairs to promote NNPBC events.
  • Serves as the liaison between UVic nursing students and the NNPBC Victoria branch.
  • Provide and share written documentation of goals and deliverables to the Executive Council once per academic session within thirty [30] days of the commencement of the session.
  • Assist other members of the Executive Council within the Nursing Student Society as required.
  • Perform other duties as outlined in the Bylaws or as directed by the Executive Council.

Members at Large (unlimited)

Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Actively work to collaborate with the Directors and Leaders in their outlined responsibilities and duties.
  • Participate in at least one Committee of the UVNSS.
  • Hold status as voting members on all Executive Council meetings.
