Our Mission
The purpose of the Association for Women in Mathematics (AWM) is to create a community in which women and girls can thrive in their mathematical endeavours, and to promote equitable opportunity and gender-inclusivity across the mathematical sciences.
A commitment to equity, diversity, and inclusivity
The AWM is firmly committed to fostering an inclusive environment that enables a diverse community to be involved in and contribute to AWM activities. The AWM believes that all people with an interest in mathematics should be supported and encouraged to participate in the profession. It is our goal to celebrate, recognize, and support a diverse mathematical community of individuals from across the spectrum of age, race, gender, gender identity and expression, national or ethnic origin, religion and religious belief, marital status, parental status, body shape or size, sexual orientation, physical ability, socioeconomic status, employment status and other aspects of diversity. For more information, please visit the AWM website.

Our Team

Shannon Ogden
President
Shannon is a PhD candidate at UVic and a 2023 Vanier Scholar. While her research focuses on extremal graph theory, she loves to explore the beautiful patterns found in all areas of mathematics. Deeply passionate about making math accessible to those without advanced degrees, Shannon created IMAGINING UVic—a biennial summer math camp for high school girls. She enjoys playing the piano (never mind how poorly) and the unequaled satisfaction of a well-organized bookcase brimming with gorgeous editions of classic novels. When not buried in math papers, Shannon can often be found rock climbing, hiking, or simply looking for the perfect tree under which to read.

Harini Kapali
Secretary
Harini is a Master’s student in Statistics at UVic. Having completed an MA in Economics previously at UVic, Harini started an MSc in Statistics due to a keen interest in understanding the fundamentals of statistical theory and modelling. Her previous work on population data and health system performance analysis at the BC Ministry of Health helped her appreciate the benefits of learning mathematical concepts for various real-world applications. Her current research focuses on survival analysis, an area of Statistics focused on the modelling and inference of time-to-event data. As part of the AWM, Harini hopes to help foster an active community of those who work with anything quantitative at UVic. In her free time, she can be found watching black-and-white movies from the 50s and 60s, and enjoying a cup of tea.

Wenlin Xu
Community Coordinator
Wenlin is an international student doing a Master program in Statistics at UVic. She focuses on medical modelling currently and also is passionate about translating complex data into clear insights. She is working on her paper about COVID-19 and also looking for a CO-OP in Canada. In her role, she focuses on fostering supportive discussions around career pathways in STEM, and helping to organize the group’s shared knowledge resources. Wenlin is quite open-minded and interested in all different cultures. When she’s not studying, she loves reading stories, walking around, or sitting on the grass.
