UVic Carbon Capture

The UVic Carbon Capture Team is an offshoot of UREC that is working on developing carbon capture technology by working closely with the Open Air Collective and the Pacific Institute for Climate Solutions (PICS).   While the team is primarily undergraduate and UVic-based, there are also graduate students and industry advisers making it a diverse and experienced team.

The first project was a small scale educational model known as the CYAN unit.  This project was completed in 2021 and functions by combining flowing air with calcium hydroxide to form calcium carbonate.  This is not a reversible system as is, but works well as an educational tool.

Current Project – Violet DACC

The primary project of the team is to create and improve upon the Open-Air Violet Project.  This project, along with the CYAN, is an open source hardware project being simultaneously worked on by many teams around the globe.  The Violet, with one design version seen below, is a reversible Direct Air Carbon Capture (DACC) system which can hopefully one day contribute to the fast expanding field of carbon capture technology!
