Elementary & Secondary Teacher Education Programs

Teachers are among the most important people in a students’ life. They guide them, inspire them and help them build meaningful and successful futures.

Our programs explore new research-based approaches to teaching and examine how and why we teach what we teach. With dynamic learning opportunities and an extraordinary environment, we prepare teachers for the responsibilities and opportunities of today’s classrooms. At UVic, you will find yourself immersed in a personalized and intimate program, with an emphasis on practical hands-on experiences early on in your degree.

      Elementary B.Ed. Program

      This program prepares you for the always-changing challenges and responsibilities of teaching in today’s elementary and middle years classrooms. This practicum-based program gets you hands-on classroom experience. You’ll graduate at the leading edge of your field with a Bachelor of Education (BEd) degree and be eligible to apply for a BC teaching certificate. You will complete three practica:  a three-week paired practicum in year two, a six-week practica in year three, and a ten-week practicum in year four.

      Elementary Post Degree

      This post-degree professional program (PDPP) is for degree holders who want to teach elementary or middle classes. After four terms and two practicum experiences, you’ll graduate with a Bachelor of Education degree and be eligible to apply for a BC teaching certificate. You will complete two practica: a six-week experience in April/May and a ten-week experience from October to December. You’ll get the chance for an international, public or independent school placement.

      Elementary PDPP Français

      The BEd Francophone Program Elementary PDPP Français is a  full-time, 16-month, pilot program starting September 2023! This program is designed for those with strong French language skills who currently hold a degree.

      Secondary Post Degree Program

      This post-degree professional program (PDPP) is for degree holders who want to teach one or two subjects in a secondary school. In this program, you’ll move through intensive course work over four terms, work in schools right away, and formalize your hand on experiences through two practicums. You’ll graduate with a Bachelor of Education degree (BEd) and be eligible to apply for a BC teaching certificate.Teacher candidates complete two practica: a six-week experience in April/May and a ten-week experience from October to December. There are opportunities for international, public or independent school placements.

      French Immersion

      There is a great need for French Immersion teachers in BC. School districts are always looking for invested people who are committed to language learning and passionate about French language and culture.

      There are options for French Immersion practicum in all three of our teacher education programs.

      Continuing Teacher Education Programs

      Interested in furthering your studies in education? We offer several options for pre-service and in-service teachers to enhance their education through coordinated course packages.
