Patient partners

  • Mindy Smith is a retired academic family physician and current medical editor who mentors clinical research faculty. She has unique health experiences being an amputee and providing care for her aging patients who have multiple health problems. She serves as chair for the Patient Advisory Committee and a Patient Voice for the KB Collaborative Services Committee.
  • Paul Burgener is a Professional Engineer and Certified Management Consultant in Nelson BC. In the last three years he has been involved with the Patient Voices Network, then joined the Patient Engagement in Research Committee (PEiR) where he is now a co-lead chair. This has led to being asked to join the Primary Community Care Transformation committee (PCCT), the Interior Health Research Advisory Council and recently invited to the Provincial Patient Advisory Council.

Principal Investigators

  • Francis Lau is a Professor in Health Information Science at UVic. He was CIHR eHealth Chair and has led major initiatives with multiple organizations across Canada (e.g. CIHR strategic training program, new emerging team and partnership in health system improvement). He was on CIHR KT Review Panel for 2 years. Francis is the Principal Investigator on this study responsible for all aspects of the study.
  • Selena Davis is a research scientist and digital health consultant. She is passionate about healthcare system transformation and empowering patients in health and care via an integrated digital health ecosystem and intelligent clinical tools and information technologies to improve care and outcomes. Selena is an Adjunct Assistant Professor in Health Information Science at University of Victoria and Adjunct Professor at University of British Columbia, Faculty of Medicine, Dept of Family Practice. The focus of her research and publications has been in the areas of design and implementation of patient digital health technologies, patient-centered measurement, implementation science and practice, and data science in healthcare. Selena’s professional consultancy roles focus on executive-level, strategic digital health leadership, research & development.

Co-Investigators

  • Marcy Antonio is an interdisciplinary PhD Candidate in Health Informatics & Nursing at UVic. For sixteen years, she visited people in their home, where she worked with them in selecting assistive technologies to support access and independence.  She has worked on multiple patient-oriented research studies that have asked patients about their experiences of living with chronic illness.  Her dissertation research asked people living with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease how they used digital technologies to stay social connected and to support their illness experiences and outcomes.
  • Danielle Lavallee is a Research Associate Professor in Dept. of Surgery and Medical Director for Patient Generated Health Data at U Washington. Her work builds on best practices in patient-centered approaches with portals across the health system to improve outcomes and quality.
  • Morgan Price is an Associate Professor, co-head of Family Practice at UBC and adjunct at UVic Computer and Health Info Science. He is a family physician working in inner city with underserved populations in Victoria. His research is in health systems change and clinical info system adoption.
  • Leila Dale is an evaluator with the KB Division of Family Practice. Her PhD from the National Institute of Health Innovation in Auckland, New Zealand, used mobile technologies to support cardiac rehabilitation. She brings research experience combined with local knowledge of the KB region to this study.
  • Sarah Fletcher has a PhD in Medical Anthropology and is the Research Manager for the Innovation Support Unit (ISU) in the Department of Family Practice at UBC and is a Medical Anthropologist with expertise in participatory research design, community engagement, health systems change and evaluation.

  • Bruce Forde is the CEO of Cambian, focused on collaborative healthcare IT solutions empowering people, families, care providers, and researchers. He has a PhD in applied science and 30 years of experience including development of electronic medical record and personal health record applications in Canada and USA.
