Workshop 2 - Introduction to Building Decarbonization

Overview:

The workshop will demystify the primary sources of GHG emissions in buildings. In the first part, will give an overview of using the Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) principle and demonstrate its pivotal role in achieving building decarbonization objectives. The workshop will discuss how the construction sector is moving towards sustainable solutions for the built environment. The participants will also learn about the City of Vancouver’s Embodied Carbon Strategy which envisions a construction economy that is healthy, equitable, circular, and carbon positive. Finally, the workshop will be wrapped up with a hands-on session on how to use the free web software tool “Athena Building LCA” to model a building.

Date and Time:

Monday, 26th August 2024, 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m.

Speakers:

  1. Mehdi Ghobadi, Research Officer and the Construction Team Lead, National Research Council of Canada
  2. Davoud Heidari, Research Officer, National Research Council of Canada
  3. Ivan Lee, Building Science Consultant, Morrison Hershfield (now Stantec)
  4. Zahra Teshnizi, Senior Planner, City of Vancouver
  5. Jennifer O’Connor, President of the Athena Sustainable Materials Institute
Workshop 3 - Climate Change and Housing, New Tools and Perspectives for Engineers and Industry

Overview:

This workshop offers new and practicing engineers a valuable introduction to a broad range of new tools currently in the development and piloting phases. Speakers will introduce new practice-based perspectives about needs and strategies, in particular infrastructure and housing for Indigenous communities. In combination, perspectives and knowledge of applied tools gained through this workshop can help engineers meet professional expectations to increase the resilience of buildings to climate change as well as other hazards and impacts. This workshop includes introductions and overviews for:

  • Climate Risk Assessment Framework Tool – is a portfolio-level climate risk screening tool for assessing risks to existing properties, new development sites, and potential acquisitions.
  • Indigenous-led approaches and strategies to the needs and challenges of developing housing and infrastructure on reserve and in rural communities.
  • New risk assessment and tools to support regulations that the Province of B.C. will begin to launch in 2024. These changes and tools will have a direct effect on the work of new engineers to take resilience and adaptation measures into account.
  • The LEEP Resilience Tool is currently in development by Natural Resources Canada. The tool is intended to support home builders and renovators to ensure sustainable and resilient housing.

Date and Time:

Monday, 26th August 2024, 12 noon – 4 :30 p.m.

Speakers:

  1. Ren Bai, Manager, Development Construction Projects, Regional Development Vancouver, Construction Services, BC Housing
  2. Lexy Relph, Practice Lead, Infrastructure Decarbonization & Resilience, Morrison Hershfield (now Stantec)
  3. Connie Davis, Director of Indigenous Relations and Engagements, First Nations Housing and Infrastructure Council
  4. Presenter from the Province of B.C.
  5. Presenter from Natural Resources Canada (NRCan)
