n.b. Program is current as of January 9th 2019, and is subject to change. All proceedings will take place at the Hotel Grand Pacific, 463 Belleville St, Victoria, BC. All conference proceedings and meetings will occur in Center / West Vancouver Island Ballroom, with lunch served in the adjacent Saturna room. Reception to be held in the South Pender Ballroom.

Call for Proposals

Proposals Due: 1 October 2018

An increase in active collaboration, community building, and knowledge mobilization presents new opportunities to create and share knowledge across traditional disciplinary and institutional boundaries, as well as with members of a broad public. As open scholarly practices gain momentum in our local, national, and international contexts, questions about how best to understand open scholarship from the perspective of its support and implementation gain prominence.

“Understanding and Enacting Open Scholarship” seeks to highlight activities, research, infrastructure, and policies that engage open social scholarship. Open social scholarship involves creating and disseminating research and research technologies to a broad, interdisciplinary audience of specialists and non-specialists in ways that are both accessible and significant. Together, at this gathering we will consider how best to model open social scholarship practices and behaviour, as well as pursue the following leading questions, among others: What are the tangible public benefits of openly accessible research data, as well as consequences of inaccessible data, and how can we ensure positive benefit by prioritizing research preservation and its open access? How do we readily and effectively promote, study, and archive cultural data and engagement with it? Which practices for mentorship, training, workflows, publications, protocols, policies, and initiatives best foster and encourage scholarly openness?

We invite you to register for this event and join the discussion during our 6th annual INKE-hosted researcher and partner winter gathering. This event will be held in Victoria, BC, and will provoke conversation and mobilize collaboration in and around digital scholarship, with an especial focus on:

  • community building and mobilization
  • shared initiatives and activities
  • digital scholarly production
  • (open) access
  • partnership
  • knowledge dissemination
  • alternative modes and methods, including in academic publishing practices
  • infrastructure
  • shifting from prototype to production
  • social knowledge creation
  • stakeholder roles and activities
  • collaboration
  • available technologies and skills
  • social media
  • public humanities

We invite proposals for lightning papers that address these and other issues pertinent to research in the area, as well as proposals for relevant project demonstrations. Proposals should contain a title, an abstract (of approximately 250 words, plus list of works cited), and the names, affiliations, and website URLs of presenters. Longer papers supporting the lightning talks will be solicited after proposal acceptance for circulation in advance of the gathering. We are pleased to welcome proposals in all languages of our community; note that the chief working language of past gatherings has been English. Please send proposals on or before October 1st 2018 to Alyssa Arbuckle at <alyssaa@uvic.ca>.

This action-oriented event is geared toward leaders and learners from all fields and arenas, including academic and non-academic researchers, graduate students and postdoctoral fellows, librarians and archivists, publishers, members of scholarly and professional associations and consortia, open source practitioners and developers, industry liaisons, community groups, and other stakeholders. Taking the success of past years’ INKE-hosted gatherings in Whistler (2014, 2015, 2016) and Victoria (2017, 2018) as our starting point, we hope to simultaneously formalize connections across fields and open up different ways of thinking about the pragmatics and possibilities of digital scholarship.

Events include:

  • Featured talks by Gabriel Miller (Federation for the Humanities and Social Sciences) and Bonnie Stewart (U Windsor), and a featured workshop by Robbin Tourangeau (Compute Canada)
  • Lightning talks, where authors present 4-minute versions of longer papers
 circulated prior to the gathering, followed by a brief discussion (papers may be 
conceptual, theoretical, application-oriented, and more)
  • Show & Tell session, where presenters give digital demonstrations of their projects and / or prototypes
  • Next Steps conversation, to articulate in a structured setting what we will do together in the future

We will also celebrate the 2019 Open Scholarship Award winners (http://etcl.uvic.ca/?p=2086), as sponsored by the Canadian Social Knowledge Institute (C-SKI; c-ski.ca) and its partners. The 2018 Open Scholarship Award was awarded to Juan Pablo Alperin (Simon Fraser U), with honourable mentions for Dene Grigar (Washington State U) and Stuart Moulthrop (U Wisconsin Milwaukee), Gantulga Lkhagva (Mongolian Libraries Consortium), and Ernesto Priego (City U London) and Peter Wilkins (Douglas C). The 2018 Emerging Open Scholarship Award was awarded to Erin Rose Glass (UC San Diego Library), with honourable mentions for Avery Dame-Griff (Winona State U), Luis Meneses (U Victoria), and Patrick Smyth (CUNY Graduate Center).
