Connecting Youth Experiences to Action

Led by Dr. Marion Selfridge

Police interactions with youth are a salient concern for policy makers and the public, particularly due to the potential long-term impact these interactions might have on the trajectory of youths’ lives. Building on mixed methods research with nearly 450 youth in three communities in British Columbia (BC), this project will develop recommendations for RCMP and local police forces in BC regarding procedural justice with youth who use drugs (YWUD).

The project’s research objectives are to: scan current evidence, policies and laws that impact access to justice for YWUD; identify key principles and practices of procedural justice to contextualize the findings and youth recommendations of the Youth Experience Project (YEP); identify and document innovative community policing and other legal strategies that attempt to meet the needs of Indigenous and non-Indigenous youth; and, working with police and RCMP, identify pathways for discussion of recommendations and gaps in policy.
