Eligibility

Are you eligible for our services?

Our program operates in partnership with the Canada Revenue Agency as part of their Community Volunteer Income Tax Program (CVITP). As part of the CVITP, our volunteers only provide services to eligible taxpayers. Eligible means low-income and simple (non-complex) tax situations.

Eligible Income Levels

Family Size Total Combined Income (all sources)
Individual Up to $35,000
Individual with a Child Up to $40,000
Couple Combined, up to $45,000
Couple with a Child Combined, up to $50,000
* for each additional child, add $2500 to the suggested family income

* interest income must be LESS than $1000 (TFSAs and RRSPs OK)

What is an eligible (simple) tax situation? In general, your tax situation is simple if you have no income or if your income comes from any of these sources (employment, pension, benefits payments, support payments, scholarships/bursaries/grants). This typically covers students, seniors, newcomers to Canada, aboriginal peoples, low-income individuals, and social assistance recipients.

Volunteers CANNOT prepare tax returns for individuals/families with complex situations, such as:
  • Total household income exceeding the limits above
  • Own foreign property worth over $100,000
  • Self-employment income and expenses
  • Business income and expenses
  • Rental income (e.g. Airbnb, foreign property)
  • Interest more than $1000
  • Capital gains or losses
  • Filed for bankruptcy
  • Are exchange students staying in Canada for less than 1 year
  • Are visiting Canada on a trip
  • Are filing for a deceased family member
