Older Adults are Using Technology

When introducing the study, the researcher heard statements such as “seniors don’t use technology”. Yet, what was being said from the public, and been seen from participants was quite different. Seniors DO use technology.  As the below graphic shows, most participants were 65 and over AND people who were over the age of 77 were some of the most active adopters of technology.   The number of participants using technology highlight the need to challenge assumptions  on who and who may not be using technology. 

83 people participated in the study. Of these, only 9 people reported not using any digital technologies.

The majority of participants were over 65 years old or older.

The 9 people who didn’t use any technology were over the age of 76

29 people identified as very active adopters of digital technologies.  Of these 29 people, the majority were over the age of 77. 

Types of Activities 

People were also using technology in multiple ways, with email and online searches being the most common activities.

The number of participants who reported using technology for the following activities. Emailing was reported by 83% of the participants. Online searches was reported by 83% of the participants. Texting was reported by 66% of the participants. Watching videos was reported by 64% of the participants. Reading online posts was reported by 57% of the participants.

Downloading apps was reported by 50% of the participants; completing surveys was reported by 50% of the participants; booking appointments was reported by 44% of the participants; video conferencing was reported by 30% of the participants; writing posts was reported by 25% of the participants;
