The Chair in Transgender Studies generates solid reliable information about the real world to drive social change and improve the well-being of Trans+ people; and to supporting and building healthy communities by facilitating activities of interest to Trans+ people and their allies.
University of Victoria Libraries is home to the largest Transgender Archives in the world. We preserve original documents recording the history of pioneering activists, community leaders, and researchers who have contributed to the betterment of Trans, Nonbinary, and Two-Spirit people. Our records span over 530 linear feet (or 1.5 football fields long), go back over 120 years, and are in 15 languages from 23 countries on six continents. We are accessible to everyone, free of charge.
The Chair in Transgender Studies hosts biennial international Moving Trans History Forward conferences. Since 2014, over 1,000 Trans+ community activists, researchers, educators, artists, service providers, family members, and allies have come together to understand their past and work together to create a better future.
