Who We Are:

ALLIE sLEMON, phd, RN (sHE/tHEY)

AdJust Research Director

“I am an Assistant Professor in the School of Nursing at the University of Victoria, and am a Registered Nurse with a background within inpatient and community mental health settings. My research centres on promoting social justice within the nursing profession and across health care systems. In particular, I work with 2SLGBTQ+ communities and people who experience mental health challenges to identify new strategies and approaches for remediating inequities in health and health care. I consistently utilize community-engaged approaches across projects, and draw on a range of methods to enhance new knowledge and strategies for remediating inequities.”

iNGRID hANDLOVSKY, phd, rn (SHE/HER)

AdJust Research Director

“I am an Assistant Professor in the School of Nursing at the University of Victoria. My research work is informed by a commitment to health equity with an emphasis on situating discrimination (structural and interpersonal) as a determinant of health. In particular, I am interested in exploring how our complex and multi-faceted social environments-inclusive to historical, political and cultural dynamics – inform health practices, perspectives and experiences of well-being for – in particular – LGBTQ2S+ individuals. My research is informed by social justice and critical perspectives to draw attention to the structural conditions that subject individuals, groups and populations to disadvantage while highlighting, and learning from, tremendous demonstrated resiliencies.”

Sage Schmied, Macp (She/They)

Research Manager

I am thrilled to position myself as a member of AdJust Research Collective. I have been immersed in health systems and health care work formally for over 5 years now and have worked at the University of Victoria as a project coordinator and research assistant on many of Dr. Slemon and Dr. Handlovsky’s research endeavors. It is a rare and true privilege to be engaged in work that is not only meaningful and enjoyable but also revolutionary in it’s practice. As an interdisciplinary scholar, educator and counsellor, I feel beyond excited to participate in research that is focused on ‘AdJust-ing’ our current societal structures.”
