4. Reports:
4.1 Chair’s Report – Cliff Haman Chair 2008
- 2008 Education Conference in Kelowna was a success
- Welcome Catherine Franz to the UVic Chapter Executive
- PEA looked at how to deal with elimination of mandatory retirement
- PEA is dealing with university-wide funding cuts
o We are reviewing cases of dismissal due to funding cuts one at a time as there was a promise that there would be none in this fiscal year
- Personal Pro-D – clarified policy – Haman quoted contract and email
- PEA will be gearing up for 2010 bargaining in coming year
o Had meeting with PEA counterparts at UBC and SFU in July

4.2 Treasurer’s Report – Vincent Connor treasurer 2008

- We spent most of the money allocated to the Chapter by the Association
o 3 social networking events
o Donated one dollar per member (rounded up) to the Mustard Seed – $800
o Donated $500 to the PEA Scholarship Bursary

4.3 Association Executive Report – Tom Gore Association Executive 2008
- Cliff and Tom are delegates from UVic Chapter to Association Exec.
- John Foxgord is Treasurer of Association
- Assoc. Exec. meets every 6 weeks
- Trying to budget conservatively at this time – maintains strong fund to cover expenses in case of a strike or a legal issue going to Supreme Court
- Education Conference
o 2008 theme – how to engage members better
- Kyle Russell – new Communications Officer for Association
o Has redesigned and rebuilt Association website
o Has redesigned the Professional (newsletter)
o Has started a PEA photo archive
- Always working on recruiting other bargaining units – most recently Law Society Lawyers
- New slogan – Professionals making a difference

4.4 Committee Reports
4.4.1 Association / University Committee AU 2008
- Committee fosters good working relations between the two parties
- Examined potential effects of elimination of mandatory retirement
- Asked University to clarify Central and Personal Pro-D processes with administrators in all departments after some members reported requests being rejected
- Working to examine and resolve Term Positions – many should be rolled over into Continuing positions as they have existed for more than 3 years

4.4.2 Local Representatives Introduction Local Reps 2008
- Introduced all Local Representatives present or not including recent appointments
- Last Local Reps lunch topics
o Review of issues around submitting Job Evaluation Questionnaires (JEQs) and appeals of these
o Clarification of true purpose of JEQ and common misconceptions – what not to do
o Much discussion of issues around Banner

4.4.3 Seminars Committee Seminars 2008

- 3 seminars have been held this years
o UVic Benefits Program for PEA Members
o Tony Joe – First Time Homebuyers: Entering the Victoria Real Estate Market
o Tony Joe – Downsizing: Using Victoria’s Strong Real Estate Market to your Advantage
- Call for new members for Seminars committee – the following members stepped forward:
o Jaquie Hovgaard
o Allison Eddy
o Adrienne Holierhoek

4.4.4 Elections Committee Elections 2008
- See report submitted by Wendy Major – attached
- A by-election for the position of Director was held in July 2008 resulting from the one-year sabbatical of Sheryl Karras.
o The outcome the appointment of Catherine Franz.
- Annual election held in October 2008 – nominations:
o John Foxgord and Vincent Connor as Directors at Large
o Tom Gore for Vice-Chair
o No other nominations received so above members elected by acclamation for two-year terms ending November 2010
- The fourth position of Director at Large was filled as per Item
11.4 c) in UVic Chapter constitution:
o 11.4 c) If insufficient nominations are received to fill the vacant position(s) by the date set by the Elections Committee for the close of nominations, the Executive will seek additional candidates and will fill any vacant positions by voting on these candidates by secret ballot.
o The position was filled by Leslie Kenny
- Call for new members for Elections Committee – the following members stepped forward:

o Carmen Koning

5. Other Business
- Many thanks to Burt Klatt for his years of service on the UVic Chapter Executive
- Burt will continue to sit on the Central Pro-D Committee
