Dear Friends,
We are students at the University of Victoria located on the unceded and unsurrendered territories of the Lekwungen, WS’ANEC’ and Wyomilth peoples. We acknowledge that our studies are conducted as visitors on this territory and would like to express our gratitude for the opportunity to do this work. This website is a product of a digital history class: A City Goes to War.
It is our belief that the narrative regarding the experience of Vancouver Island Indigenous peoples during World War One has not been given enough attention. Inspired by the scarcity of information on this topic, we felt it was important to tell the story of why a large number of Indigenous peoples from Vancouver Island did not enlist, and honour those who did serve, and ultimately for some, lost their lives and rights during the First Wold War.
We have reached out to members from Indigenous communities across Vancouver Island and are encouraged by the support we have received in our quest to maintain an authentic re-telling of this history.
We welcome any historical contribution regarding any aspect of Indigenous peoples in WWI or the biography of an Indigenous relative or person who fought in WWI. Please feel free to email us at ww1indig@gmail.com as we would be grateful to add it to this collection.
Sincerely,
Heather, Jasmine, Jordan & Veronica.
