{"id":1938,"date":"2021-01-28T13:02:36","date_gmt":"2021-01-28T21:02:36","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/onlineacademiccommunity.uvic.ca\/wellness\/?p=1938"},"modified":"2021-01-28T13:03:10","modified_gmt":"2021-01-28T21:03:10","slug":"resilience-resources","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/onlineacademiccommunity.uvic.ca\/wellness\/2021\/01\/28\/resilience-resources\/","title":{"rendered":"Resilience Resources"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong>What is resilience, why is it so important, and how do you know if you\u2019re resilient enough?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Resilience is typically defined as the capacity to recover from difficult life events.<\/p>\n<div>&nbsp;<\/div>\n<div class=\"Collapsible\"><strong><span class=\"Collapsible__trigger is-open\">Why is resilience important?<\/span><\/strong><\/div>\n<div class=\"Collapsible\">\n<div class=\"Collapsible__contentOuter\">\n<div>&nbsp;<\/div>\n<div class=\"Collapsible__contentInner\">Resilience is important because it gives people the strength needed to process and overcome hardship. Those lacking resilience get easily overwhelmed, and may turn to unhealthy coping mechanisms. Resilient people tap into their strengths and support systems to overcome challenges and work through problems.<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<div class=\"eh-section-title eh-section-title--default eh-section-title--nested\">\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p class=\"eh-section-title__heading\"><strong>Resilience Training<\/strong><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"eh-content-block__content\">\n<p>The good news is that resilience can be learned. For example, people can build up social support networks or learn to reframe negative thoughts.<\/p>\n<p>Learning to be resilient doesn\u2019t mean figuring out how to \u201cgrin and bear it\u201d or to simply \u201cget over it.\u201d It\u2019s not about learning to avoid obstacles or resisting change.<\/p>\n<p>Building resilience is a process by which people utilize flexibility to reframe thought patterns and learn to tap into a strengths-based approach to working through obstacles.<\/p>\n<p><strong>How to Build and Cultivate Resilience<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>It\u2019s helpful to think of resilience as a process. The following are steps that can help build resilience over time:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Develop self-awareness. <\/strong>Understanding how you typically respond to stress and adversity is the first step toward learning more adaptive strategies. Self-awareness also includes understanding your strengths and knowing your weaknesses.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Build self-regulation skills.<\/strong> Remaining focused in the face of stress and adversity is important but not easy. Stress-reduction techniques, such as guided imagery, breathing exercise, and mindfulness training, can help individuals regulate their emotions, thoughts, and behaviors.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Learn coping skills.<\/strong> There are many coping skills that can help in dealing with stressful and challenging situations. They include journaling, reframing thoughts, exercising, spending time outdoors, socializing, improving sleep <a href=\"https:\/\/www.everydayhealth.com\/healthy-living\/guide-to-good-hygiene.aspx\" data-gd-wrapped=\"\">hygiene<\/a>, and tapping into creative outlets.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Increase optimism.<\/strong> People who are more optimistic tend to feel more in control of their outcomes. To build optimism, focus on what you <em>can<\/em> do when faced with a challenge, and identify positive, problem-solving steps that you can take.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Strengthen connections.<\/strong> Support systems can play a vital role in resilience.
