Read the instructions carefully and determine the right approach<\/span><\/span><\/h3>\n

Reading the instructions carefully may seem obvious, but far too often <\/span>a simple<\/span> instruction is <\/span>missed<\/span> and marks are lost<\/span> unnecessarily. <\/span>Note the word count or page range, formatting requirements, due date, and any instructions for submission (in Brightspace? By email? In class?). <\/span><\/span>Pay attention to every word, especially verbs like \u201canalyze,\u201d \u201ccompare,\u201d \u201cdiscuss,\u201d or \u201cevaluate,\u201d as these <\/span>i<\/span>ndicate<\/span> <\/span>the specific approach you need to take.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

Consider the assignment\u2019s purpose and place in the course <\/span><\/h4>\n

It can be easy to think of assignments as individual hurdles to complete in passing a course, but each course assessment activity\u2019s purpose is for you to demonstrate that you\u2019ve achieved a fundamental aspect of the course\u2019s learning objectives, also known as \u201clearning outcomes.\u201d\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Does your syllabus or the course calendar list the \u201clearning outcomes\u201d for the course? Consider how the assignment is helping you to achieve them. This will help you better align your assignment with the instructor\u2019s expectations.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Clarify any questions and ambiguities<\/h3>\n

Professors <\/span>appreciate<\/span> when students take <\/span>the initiative<\/span> to ensure <\/span>they\u2019re<\/span> on the right path! If any part of the assignment is unclear to you, email your instructor, visit office hours, or ask a question in class if possible. Chances are that if you have a question, other students are also confused about the same thing and will appreciate having clarification<\/span>, so <\/span>don\u2019t<\/span> be afraid to ask questions.\u00a0<\/span><\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Get help if you need it! <\/span><\/span><\/span><\/h3>\n

There\u2019s<\/span> no gold star on your transcript for completing assignments without help. There may be some tasks you\u2019re meant to complete on your own (take-home exams, for instance), but for most assignments <\/span>it\u2019s perfectly ok, and even a good idea, to talk about the assignment with your classmates, bounce ideas off friends or family members, and book appointments with <\/span>the Centre for Academic Communication (CAC)<\/span>. <\/span>Collaborative and participatory learning is a big part of effective learning<\/span>, and <\/span>we\u2019re<\/span> here to help!<\/span><\/span>\u00a0<\/span> <\/span><\/p>\n
