Your feedback helps your instructor understand your experience and improves the course. The university also has <a href=\"https:\/\/www.uvic.ca\/vpacademic\/about-contacts\/news-initiatives\/course-outlines-2024.php\">a set of course expectations<\/a> that will help you understand what you can anticipate in your courses.<\/p>\n<p>Providing feedback may be intimidating or challenging for a number of reasons \u2013 including the fact that instructors are ultimately responsible for providing your grades. Communications to instructors should demonstrate respect and have a constructive tone. It is not acceptable to make comments based on the gender, age, or identity of the instructor. The University of Victoria will not tolerate racism, sexualized violence, or any form of discrimination, bullying or harassment (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.uvic.ca\/services\/studentlife\/student-conduct\/online-student-conduct\/index.php\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Learn More<\/a>)<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #005493\"><strong>Be specific and provide examples<\/strong>.<\/span> Avoid personal comments and instead reference specific events or aspects of the course and observable behaviours. For example, instead of saying an instructor or course is \u201c<em>to<\/em>o <em>disorganized<\/em>\u201d provide specifics, such as \u201c<em>On two occasions, what was shared in class was different than what was on the syllabus which made it difficult to prepare.<\/em>\u201d<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #005493\"><strong>Describe how this aspect of the course or the behaviour affects you<\/strong>.<\/span> Describing how a situation makes you feel offers the reader a different perspective and allows the instructor to gain a better understanding of the situation.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #005493\"><strong>Offer alternative solutions or suggestions<\/strong><\/span> to address your critiques. Although it may not be possible to provide these specific solutions, it can help the instructor understand more about what students need in the course. Your participation in providing feedback is essential for helping to create a good learning experience.<\/p>\n<p>For example, consider providing feedback at the following times:<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #005493\"><strong style=\"font-size: 16px\">Midterm feedback.<\/strong><\/span><span style=\"font-size: 16px\"> During the course, some instructors may ask you to complete a mid-course feedback survey or similar activity to find out what is going well, any challenges you are encountering<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #005493\"><strong style=\"font-size: 16px\">End of term feedback.<\/strong><\/span><span style=\"font-size: 16px\"> Courses at UVic use\u00a0<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.uvic.ca\/learningandteaching\/faculty\/resources\/ces\/index.php\" style=\"font-size: 16px\">Course Experience Surveys (CES)<\/a><span style=\"font-size: 16px\">. If you feel you\u2019ve been treated unfairly, you may want to consider reaching out to the department chair or the <a href=\"https:\/\/uvicombudsperson.ca\/\">UVic Ombudsperson<\/a> for support.<\/p>\n<p>In some instances, your concerns about an instructor may not be safe or appropriate to bring forward to the instructor themselves \u2013 e.g. instances of potential discrimination. Please know that there are campus resources, like the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.uvic.ca\/equity\/\">Equity &amp; Human Rights <span>(EQHR)\u00a0<\/span>office<\/a>, that can provide support in these circumstances.<\/p>\n<p>Finally, the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.uvic.ca\/services\/studentlife\/student-support\/index.php\">Student Support Coordination (SSC) Program<\/a> provides individual support plans for students experiencing crises or barriers to accessing support. Student Support Coordinators work with students and assist them to explore, connect with and navigate wellness and academic resources both on- and off-campus.
