Calendar
Use the Calendar tool to arrange and visualize course events in multiple views and enable integration of course content and your Calendar. You can use iCal to synchronize the Calendar tool to your personal calendars (such as Outlook and Google Calendar, as well as iPhone and Android).
The Calendar tool holds all the dates of all courses you are involved in. You can filter which Course calendars you want to see at a given time, and also subscribe to a calendar. The Calendar tool also allows the creation of Tasks. Tasks are small, personal reminders that appear below the Calendar, can be checked off, and can have due dates associated with them if necessary.

Course announcements and notifications
Announcements are a quick and easy form of communication that are front and centre to your experience in a course. They display on the front page of your course. Once you log into Brightspace for the first time, announcements are automatically emailed to you, but you can customize where/how you are notified as well.
Why receive announcements?
- Your instructor can share important information like what important due dates and exams are coming up. This is a good way to stay on track within your course.
- Be aware of important news such as cancellations, reminders, or upcoming class events.
- Receive instant notifications about announcements postings through email and/or SMS.
Class progress
The Class Progress tool is available to students for the purposes of keeping track of grade, progress and participation in a course. Students can use Class Progress see their own engagement and progress in a course. The class progress tool is available on your Nav Bar inside any course and includes:
- User grades
- Completion of learning objectives (if enabled for the course)
- Access of content topics (if enabled for content)
- Participation in discussions,
- Assignment and quiz submissions
- Checklist completion
- Survey responses
- Login history and last system access
- Records of content download
Discover
There are several community and resource sites (e.g., training, clubs, others) available to everyone in Brightspace. The Discover tool allows you to search for, enrol in, and un-enrol from select UVic courses and find important resources.
To self-register or request registration in one of these sites, simply follow these steps:
Log into Brightspace with your Netlink ID and passphrase.
At the main “Welcome Page”, click on Discover in the navbar at the top of the page.
From the list that shows, click on the course / site you would like to join.
Click the blue “Enroll in Course” button.
