About the courses

We have developed the following self-paced Brightspace courses to help you put academic integrity into practice. Each unit explores a current academic integrity challenge you might face as a student at UVic.

We offer two courses for students, at the undergraduate and the graduate level. The courses are decribed below.

Undergraduate Integrity in Practice

Academic Integrity 101

In this unit, you will explore the values of academic integrity and their significance in your academic journey and beyond. As a student, it is important to understand academic integrity and recognize instances of academic dishonesty. Through this unit, you will learn strategies to maintain academic integrity, recognize violations and find support when needed.

What are the learning outcomes?

As you work through this unit, you will

  • define academic integrity and its values,
  • explain how the values of integrity apply to your studies, academic life, and beyond,
  • recognize academic integrity violations and understand how UVic responds to them, and
  • identify resources to help you maintain academic integrity.

Contract Cheating Awareness

In this unit, you will explore the meaning and pitfalls of contract cheating. It is important to know about contract cheating because it can jeopardize the value of the work you do and have other negative consequences for your academic journey and beyond. Knowing a little more about this topic will hopefully empower you to recognize (and take action) when you are at risk of being targeted or harassed by a contract cheating company and make ethical decisions about your coursework.

What are the learning outcomes?

As  you work through this unit, you will:

  • Define contract cheating
  • Differentiate contract cheating from other threats to academic integrity
  • Evaluate if you are the target of contract cheating advertisements and marketing
  • Reflect on contract cheating risks
  • Propose an action plan with strategies to prevent contract cheating

Graduate Integrity in Practice

As you begin your graduate studies at UVic, we invite you to complete Graduate Integrity in Practice, a self-paced Brightspace course designed to support your transition into UVic’s academic community. While you may already be familiar with academic integrity concepts, this course provides essential context for UVic’s policies, expectations, and research practices. You’ll explore the values of academic stewardship, responsible research, and strategies for maintaining integrity in your academic work.

What are the learning outcomes?

As you work through this course, you will be able to

  • explain academic stewardship and its importance to you as a graduate student, your discipline, and the broader UVic community.
  • identify and reflect on the core values of academic integrity and research ethics in graduate work.
