Being Introduced to the world of research and experiment design with a team that led me along the way and taught me invaluable research skills. The most memorable experience was hitting breakthroughs and learning techniques that allowed me to get better research results such as looking at ‘related articles’ on Google Scholar and learning which journals provided empirical work vs theoretical work.

Enrique Brolo
Learning CUDA and getting hands-on experience with parallel programming. I enjoyed challenging myself and exploring GPU efficiency as it gave me a deeper understanding of high performance computing.

Alexander Darby
Coming up with ideas and testing them on the fly with materials in the lab. Having access to a 3D bioprinting laboratory to do rapid prototyping was an oftentimes exhilarating experience!
Biography
Alexander Darby will be entering into the Biomedical Engineering program in his 2nd year at UVic. He was born and raised in Saanich, and continues to enjoy living there while attending UVic. Having an interest in regenerative medicine, the opportunity to work in the lab of Dr. Stephanie Willerth to learn about the world of 3D bioprinting was exciting. He hopes to apply the experience he gained in the lab to his future co-ops, perhaps contributing to advancing the field in his future career. Outside of the lab, Alexander enjoys spending time staying active by swimming, running, working out, SCUBA diving, canoeing, hiking, and cycling.
Alex Gnaedinger
The big high-five and sense of exhilaration when, after a series of failures, we finally succeeded in synthesizing our desired compound using a route undocumented in scientific literature. What a rush!
Biography
I grew up in Ottawa, spending summers camping in Algonquin Park’s placid beauty. After exploring South America and studying at Carleton University, I embraced life as a musician and traveler. My journey led to a tree planting job in BC, where I fell in love with the West Coast and settled in Victoria to study permaculture. Inspired by my early experiences, I aimed to harmonize humanity’s relationship with nature. This mission brought me to UVic, where I’m now studying engineering to gain the tools needed to deepen my impact on environmental solutions.
Diljot Manj
The most fun I’ve had in my internship was choosing which game would be used for the experiment. We all came together and played some games and cast a ballot to decide.
Biography
Hey there! I’m Diljot and I’m a Psychology and Computer Science Major here at UVic, with a passion for AI and Video Game Development. I’m exploring how these fields can address personal challenges like stage fright. I’m also keen on Cybersecurity and Cryptography, focusing on social engineering’s intersection with AI. Currently, I have been assisting in research at the MIR Lab, examining video games’ positive effects on intergroup relations. I aim to pursue graduate studies in AI and Applied Computer Science. Outside academics, I enjoy programming, strategy games like Crusader Kings 3, and Dancing.
Cole Marriette
Without a doubt, the most memorable part of my internship experience was working directly with the team of engineers at Dr. Giles’ lab. With all my co-workers being 4th years or graduate students, each one had something valuable to teach me and they were all very supportive and encouraging of my efforts.
Biography
My name is Cole Marriette and I am entering my second year in the UVic Engineering program. I’m from Victoria, and in my free time I like to write, play tabletop roleplaying games, and practice mixed martial arts. I’ve always had a focused interest in Mechanical Engineering, whether it be cars or 3D printing. This is why exploring Biomechanical research has been so helpful in broadening my horizons and expanding my skillset. Thanks to the VKURA program I am feeling very confident in my upcoming second year co-op and in my future as an engineer.
Liz McCleary
The most memorable part of my internship was participating in fieldwork during two separate trips. I had the opportunity to hike, canoe, learn to identify alpine plant species, set up game cameras, and program weather stations.
Biography
Liz is a third-year Geomatics student here at the University of Victoria. Over the course of their degree, they have developed a passion for ethnoecology and community mapping and hope to continue developing these skills in the last two years at UVic.
Zoë van de Vegte
The most impactful part of my VKURA experience was hearing about all the amazing projects my peers were taking on over the term. Learning about their work left me even more motivated to work on my own project.

Hi I’m Zoë, and this fall I start my second year at UVic in computer engineering. I grew up on the island, and I’ve always loved solving problems and creating things, whether it be art or technology. I’m very excited to dive deep into the inner workings of computers and electronics through my degree, and explore exciting applications through clubs and projects, like this one! In my spare time, I love reading, drawing, and looking at clouds.

Graeme Jones
The most memorable part of my internship experience was my time in the research library of the Comédie-Française in Paris. I found it fascinating to handle and read the original manuscripts ; my tactile experience with these fragile historical documents was a new and alluring experience for me, and one that I am very grateful to have had.
Biography
My name is Graeme Jones and I’m a third-year student studying visual arts and French. My hobbies include photography, playing guitar, learning languages and doing outdoor activities such as hiking, camping, cycling and skiing. Before my VKURA internship, I spent my summers working in the outdoors in provincial parks. I hope to continue to allow my interests to drive my education and experiences.
Simran Kang
The most memorable part of my internship experience would have to be the first performances in front of our original participants. Seeing the reactions to their stories being shared on stage in a positive way felt like such a privilege.
Biography
Simran Kang is a third year student at the University of Victorias Phoenix Theater. She is the BIPOC student co-representative for the Theatre course union and has a passion for storytelling through the performing arts.Her goal as an artist it would be to be able to help build community through the craft of theatre for all to enjoy. Her experience with the VKURA internship has greatly shaped her as both an academic and an artist

boozho, my name is hawlii. my pronouns are they/them. on my matrilineal side I am anishinaabek from treaty 3. on my patrilineal side I am 3rd generation descendent of irish-settler ancestry. drawing, painting, and playing music have been lifelong practices, both recognised and supported by my family and community growing up. today I dedicate equal time to local mutual-aid and community-building projects as I do solo practices here on unceded lək̓wəŋən and W̱SÁNEĆ territory.

Soren Kim
Finding new connections between manuscripts and published works. There are still so many discoveries to be made in the Al Purdy archives!
Biography
I am entering my third year as an English honours student. I am primarily interested in modernist British and American poetry, but this project has been a compelling introduction to CanLit studies and archival work. Outside of class I enjoy hiking, climbing, reading, and producing music.

Antonia Kropp
The most memorable part of my internship was receiving co-authorship on two papers and collaborating with the team, from setting up experiments to discussing the data and brainstorming improvements.
Biography
My name is Antonia Kropp, I’m from Hamburg, Germany and I am in my second year at Uvic studying Chemistry and Ocean Sciences. I love chemistry as it is like solving puzzles and I am very passionate about the ocean and wish to study its systems to help protect and preserve marine environments. Combining Chemistry with Ocean Sciences opened up seemingly boundless opportunities. What particularly fascinates me are hydrothermal vents and the unique chemistry occurring in the deep ocean. Beyond academics, I love exploring the outdoors—whether it be hiking, sailing, diving, or looking for good trees to climb.
Kaia Richards
The most memorable part of my research was getting to be a part of a research team and learning hands on the important steps that go into conducting a research project.
Biography
Kaia is a second year student at UVic, planning to obtain her psychology degree in a Bachelor’s of Science. In her third and fourth year, she plans to specify her studies in the psychology streams of neuroscience and mental health. After completing her undergraduate degree, Kaia plans to go into medical school to study neuroscience. In her free time she enjoys playing and making music, and enjoys learning about the psychology behind music as well.

My best memories of VKURA will be the sense of accomplishment and joy of getting an experiment to work. And the wonderful people I met!

Hi! I’m Ash and I’m entering my third year in Combined Honours Physics and Astronomy. This past summer I worked with the MATHUSLA group at UVic doing experimental particle physics; playing with physics with my own two hands has made me even more confident I chose the right field! Outside of research, I am head of events for the Physics and Astronomy undergraduate course union (PHASERs), and Councillor for Undergraduate Students for the Canadian Association of Physicists’ (CAP). I’m always happy to spread my passion for physics! In my free time, I love reading, music, and my incredible friends!
Amelia Schmit
The most memorable part of my internship experience was learning about and being a part of the entire research process. I feel that this experience allowed me to utilize the skills I have learned within the classroom setting to create meaningful and impactful research.

My name is Amelia Schmit, and I am entering my third year of studies at UVic. I am currently working towards my Bachelor of Science in Health Information Science. I have a passion for improving the healthcare system and truly enjoy being a part of projects that aim to help patients understand their health. Outside of school, I live a very active and social lifestyle. When I’m not studying or on campus, you can find me in the gym, hiking with a friend, or lying on the beach with a good book.
Anna Tikhonova
The highlight of my VKURA experience was connecting with and learning from the amazing graduate students in the Biology Lab, while exchanging knowledge and ideas with them.
Biography
I’ve just completed my first year studying Sciences at UVic and look forward to continuing my studies in the Food, Nutrition, and Health Major at UBC. Through this amazing research opportunity, I have developed a keen interest in human aging and the dietary factors that influence it. I am eager to explore this further in my nutrition classes! Outside of school, I enjoy strength training, baking, and photography.
Elitza Wise
Being able to visualize the shapes after months of just writing code was incredibly rewarding. Also, confirming the expectation of sub-exponential growth with such a closely fitting graph really cemented all of the work done.
Biography
Elitza Wise is a third year student at UVic pursuing an honours mathematics degree with a statistics minor. Coming from a family of math lovers, she grew up with an interest and appreciation for the subject. Throughout highschool and university she has found it rewarding to help others understand and enjoy mathematics more deeply. She loves to read, bake, play piano, and travel and explore new cultures. The trips around Bulgaria and Croatia were most memorable because of the connection to her roots.
Social Sciences
Cici Chen
A highlight for me was reading about how others have experienced weight stigma. Many of these stories resonated with my own experiences, so it was comforting to know I am not alone. It’s also fulfilling to know that I’m contributing to creating a positive change in society.
Biography
Hao Yue (Cici) Chen is a first-generation undergraduate student at the University of Victoria, where she is pursuing a bachelor’s degree in psychology. She was born in Mainland China but moved to Canada as an immigrant at the age of six. In her free time, Cici enjoys playing Animal Crossing: New Horizons and immersing herself in a good book. Her passion for helping the local community has led her to volunteer at a physiotherapy clinic and a crisis line in Victoria. Cici aspires to become a clinical psychologist and hopes to support other first-generation students throughout their academic journeys.

I really enjoyed having the opportunity to work with Professor Salemi, and diving deeper into the world of environmental economics. Truly a pleasure!
Biography
I am a third year Economics student at the University of Victoria. Growing up in the DR Congo and Kenya, I have developed a keen interest in community-led social change that address key issues like education, healthcare, and environmental sustainability. Furthermore, as a community leader at UVic residences, I enjoy establishing a safe and fun environment in the dorms. I also love to watch basketball, football (soccer), and enjoy hiking 🙂
Alena Gavrilenko
Reading about feminist ideologies from different countries and contrasting their perspectives has been a key highlight of my research process. I’ve also highly enjoyed composing a visual infographic, despite the challenge of simplifying all my information, the creative aspect has really spoke to my soul.

My name is Alena Gavrilenko, and I am entering into my second year of the Political Science program at the University of Victoria. A significant personality trait of mine is curiosity about the world; Therefore, analyzing diverse political ideas in my first ever research undertaking has been not only a very educational journey, but one full of exploration and excitement.
Yoo Hyun (Joey) Kim
I loved the experience of conducting research based on my curiosity. I also really liked the opportunity to connect with other students in different fields.

Yoo Hyun (Joey) Kim, an international student at the University of Victoria, is pursuing a major in economics for his Bachelor of Arts degree. He hopes to apply the knowledge and experience gained from the program to his future endeavours.
Mirai Molina
I really enjoy learning about the academic research process and I liked my weekly meetings with my supervisor to discuss findings.
Biography
Mirai Molina is a second-year political science major and global development minor student. Her main academic interests are Canadian politics, international relations, and postcolonial studies. In the future, she plans to attend graduate school and pursue a career in international politics. She loves a cup of dark coffee and outside of academics, enjoys reading, cooking, and baking.
Jaedyn Nuraney
The most memorable part of my internship experience was hearing the experiences and insights that participants had to share during the interviews. Their personal stories and perspectives gave me a deeper understanding of the challenges faced by older 2SLGBTQIA+ adults and the importance of social support in addressing loneliness.

My name is Jaedyn Nuraney, and I am entering my fourth year of Public Health at UVic with a minor in Public Administration. I am passionate about addressing health inequities and advocating for marginalized communities, focusing on improving access to healthcare. I’m committed to addressing barriers that prevent vulnerable populations from accessing the care and resources they need. My goal is to use my skills to make a meaningful impact in public health by promoting equity and inclusion.
Sarah Vos
The most memorable aspect of this internship was working under Dr. Lois Harder. I am so grateful to have had the privilege and opportunity to learn from a leading expert in the field of political science.

Sarah Vos is a second-year Social Science student majoring in Political Science and minoring in History. She was born and raised on Treaty 6 territory and is grateful to live, learn, and play on the unseeded territory of the WSÁNEĆ, lək̓ʷəŋən, and Wyomilth people. Sarah hopes to complete law school and work in the human rights field while continuing to play high-level soccer. Her ultimate goal is to do work that addresses social injustices and inequalities for marginalized communities.
