The UVic Formula Racing team is a university level club with the goal is of designing, building and racing an open-wheeled, formula-style race car every year. We go on to compete in Formula SAE, the world\u2019s largest collegiate design competition.
\nOur members are highly dedicated and motivated students who seek to get the most out of their university experience. Throughout the year, the team puts thousands of hours into the development of the prototype vehicle. Members expand their knowledge far beyond what is achieved during a Bachelor\u2019s degree alone. Team members gain valuable experience with practical applications of engineering theory, business and relations, hands-on design, and manufacturing.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/td>\n

About the Competition<\/b><\/span><\/h1>\n<\/div>\n
\n

The team attends Formula SAE Michigan and Formula SAE Electric at the Michigan International Speedway in Brooklyn, Michigan. The competition consists of a set of static events designed to test team members’ understanding of engineering concepts and validate the safety of the car. The team also competes in dynamic events that pit all the cars against each other over a series of four time-trial events. 118 different universities competed at the combustion competition in 2024, making it the largest collegiate design competition of its kind.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n

From suspension to electronics, members design various aspects of the car. By taking engineering basics and applying them in practice we create designs that are actionable with the resources available to the team. The team uses a variety of software to design the car including:<\/p>\n

– Solidworks
\n– Star CCM+
\n– Altium
\n– Matlab<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/td>\n
