Ann Friedman, Be Mine

I have a huge lady crush on Ann Friedman. She’s killing it on the internet and I admire her freelance journalism career. (like omg check out her FAQ page, it’s too good for words.)

Her career trajectory is something I envy, but it also seems attainable or at least not uncommon. Ann writes weekly for The Cut, The Hairpin and the Columbia Journalism Review. Her work also appears in places like The New Yorker.

Here’s a recent interview she did with The Riveter.

Some of my favourite Cut articles:

“Our Tumblrs, Our Teenage Selves”

“How Tindr solved online dating for women”

“Why don’t we have a monogamy app?”

Okay, okay so not groundbreaking investigative journalism, but these are topics that A) appeal to me and B) relate to my life.

She also makes these pie charts for The Hairpin. (fyi this blog is amazing, ladies, read this!)

I’m all for reading about ‘technology’ and the latest updates/programs/devices, but I enjoy (and admire) writers who weave our current technologies into their writing and their branding/self-promotion. Like I said above, Ann is killing it.

Her website is a lovely little Tumblr where she posts her work and other insightful lady tidbits. I mean, you don’t have to be a lady to enjoy her stuff, but I am her target demographic— female writer.

She has Twitter, duh. It’s also lovely.

And she sends out a weekly newsletter. At first I wasn’t sure what I was getting myself into like do you just want my email to spam me with clickthrough links so you make money??? Nope, it’s not like that at all. She includes her published work from the week, a GIF inspiration and a curated reading list of the week’s best internet stuff.

My dreams include meeting Ann, talking about journalism and then co-writing one of her #realtalk columns for Columbia Journalism Review.
