How to Overcome Bias and Spam

Last week our devoted group of TED watchers viewed only 2 talks. We had some technical difficulties with the computer in the conference room – so funny that we’re a bunch of tech-heads but had to call support in to rescue us. Turns out that the wireless mouse had been turned off to save battery power or some such thing, and once it was turned back on the connections were all happy again. It’s always good to be reminded how little I know about anything.

Here’s what we watched:

Verna’s talk is passionate. She helps you see your own biases by sharing how she realized she had some of her own. She made me think of this video…

… because when I watched it on my FB feed, I fell right in line with these kids. My default for these professions is male. A bias I wasn’t conscious of. And we all have them.  In looking for this video, I found this playlist on YouTube, in case you’re interested.

The next talk was lighter fare, and definitely drew some appreciative laughs.

While it might be fun to follow James’ lead on this, I think I’ll leave it up to him. Tempting… but no.

Our next TED Talk lunch will be on Tuesday, March 21 in CLE030.
